Dang, Wodin, I spent a good half hour looking through that site! [:D]

wodin -> RE: Star Fleet Battles (10/25/2010 11:50:18 AM)

enjoy the game...it's good fun and in no way amatuer

amazing the things you can find hidden away on the net...

wodin -> RE: Star Fleet Battles (10/25/2010 2:37:24 PM)

Big thanks to NefariousKoel who pretty much found the game...I just dug abit

Erik Rutins -> RE: Star Fleet Battles (10/25/2010 2:49:29 PM)

Thanks for the links, Wodin. On a related note, did anyone here play "The Warp Factor" or "The Cosmic Balance" by SSI (Strategic Simulations Inc.)? Those were my favorites on the computer back then.

Regards,

- Erik

ilovestrategy -> RE: Star Fleet Battles (10/25/2010 3:03:38 PM)

1981? The graphics were pretty good for back them. Klargon Empire. I love it! [:D]

RedArgo -> RE: Star Fleet Battles (10/25/2010 6:38:15 PM)

I played both of those. I'm suprised there were never really any successors to them. Maybe the market is too small.

If that STCS plays is good as it looks that will be great. If it is good, I wonder why he didn't dump the Star Trek and try to sell it.

wodin -> RE: Star Fleet Battles (10/26/2010 12:03:11 AM)

not enough to it to be honest for a sale...tis a very well made game though...but would need alot more content...like being able to target individual parts of the ship would be good...also a vertical axis

NefariousKoel -> RE: Star Fleet Battles (10/26/2010 12:11:55 AM)

It's still missing some game mechanics, such as being able to overload shields, but it's kinda fun and the AI has beat me twice in a row in the Enterprise vs Romulan V-30(?) scenario.

Both are still on my hard drive. As is Cosmic Balance II, which I have yet to get around to playing. *sigh*

Note that The Warp Factor was released in two versions. While both had the aforementioned "Klargons," as well as the "Alliance" and "Remans," the later version did not have the SFB/Star Trek silhouettes (I assume SSI learned that race names weren't the only thing Paramount owned).

I'm just curious, how many people here have played Star Fleet Battles?

Oh man, I sound like a bot! [X(][:D]

I played SFB a lot in the 80s and even played two moderated campaign games - with about 8 players total. Since we had a moderator, we could tweak the production rules - and IIRC we could remove about 10% of the "cost" of the ships and add back in 20% ... in other words you could make changes to the ship designs but you had to stay within +/- 10% of a given published SSD which you used as a base line. Allowed lots of customization. I named all my ships - and cared about what happened to them. I think I was the Klingons in the first campaign and the Hydrans in the second. Both were enjoyable - but people tended to drop out when they lost their first big battle. I used a retrograd tactic for fleet engagements that no one managed to counter.

Great find! Definately not a AAA title, but pretty impressive. Lost my first battle.

I think I may have played an older version of this but it kept crashing so I lost interest.

Thanks Wodin!

ROFL! I semi-recently picked up a space-miniatures ruleset wherein they recommended naming each ship as they tended to last longer.

You mean the Kauffman Retrograde? It was hard to beat.

I recall playing Star Fleet:The War Begins on the C64 back in the day. The one you had to enter a bearing for firing torpedoes, so it certainly tested your bearing guesstimates. Fun stuff. [8D]

You're thinking of the ST Tactical Combat Simulator game from FASA. Which was very similar. In my opinion the rules to this one was better than SFC - more streamlined, including the damage system which was much more interesting. For being a faster playing game, it seemed to have more detail in the basics.

Heretical I know, but I'd probably agree. Very elegant system that reflected the TV/movie combat pretty well. That said, I played a lot more of this one than SFB as I was also playing the Star Trek RPG at the time, to which the combat game was a sort of stand-alone add on.

ilovestrategy -> RE: Star Fleet Battles (10/27/2010 6:46:00 AM)

I played the Star Trek RPG too. Good times!

gabeeg -> RE: Star Fleet Battles (10/27/2010 6:33:55 PM)

Owned and Played Starfleet battles...very, very fun game.  Still have the box on my shelf in my closet...but have nobody to play with :(

Sabre21 -> RE: Star Fleet Battles (10/27/2010 8:02:04 PM)

Yep..My kids and I started on Star Fleet Battles back when it all began. I still have all the original stuff around here somewhere. Along with Federation and Empire which we still play. A buddy of mine and I played F&E for 2 months this last summer having had it set up in my living room. He wants to do it again this winter. I also played Cosmic Balance..I probably have it around here somewhere too.
