your thoughts on this movie? I bet sometime, somewhere that happened. Overall I liked it.

bairdlander2 -> RE: Just watched catch 22 for the first time. (10/22/2010 4:42:49 AM)

The novel the film is based on is actually about Macarthyism and post WW2 American society.

Greybriar -> RE: Just watched catch 22 for the first time. (10/22/2010 4:46:20 AM)

I read the book, but I don't remember ever seeing the movie.

The guy named Major Major Major who was promoted to the rank of Major when he was inducted into the Army cracked me up.

Did you like it, Greybriar? Catch-22 is one of those that's been on my "Books that I might want to read someday, but have no idea if they're up my alley" list.

That's a tough one. It's been so long since I read it that the only thing I remember about it is the Major Major Major Major guy. I guess I will have to put it on my list of books to read. Sorry I couldn't answer your question.

Hmm, I thought the movie Catch-22 was a vietnam film where what's his name... had to bail out and was trying to get air-lifted out of there.

Anyone read the sequel novel?

wodin -> RE: Just watched catch 22 for the first time. (10/22/2010 11:10:54 PM)

yeah it's the same book....[;)]

hgilmer3 -> RE: Just watched catch 22 for the first time. (10/22/2010 11:51:40 PM)

The movie, if I remember correctly, was based on a bomber group that was flying out of the Mediterranean during WW2.  The deeper meaning of what it was about, obviously sailed over my head.  I read it when I was a teenager.  I thought the book was hilarious and I thought the movie did not live up to what I was hoping for.

I forget the sequel's name, but I think I either read it or tried to but it was not as good.

Edit: I will say this - if you aren't a fan of dry wit, then you probably won't like the book.

Closing Time is a 1994 novel by Joseph Heller as a sequel to the popular Catch-22. It takes place in New York City in the 1990s, and revisits some characters of the original, including Yossarian, Milo Minderbinder and Chaplain Tappman.

The book has two stories that are interwoven throughout – that of Yossarian in the last stages of his life, and that of Sammy Singer and Lew Rabinowitz, two men from Coney Island who also fought in World War II (the Sammy Singer character makes a brief appearance in Catch-22 as the tailgunner aboard Yossarian's bomber who kept waking up and fainting when he saw Yossarian trying to attend to the wounds of Snowden).

The book is known as classic literature and I did enjoy the film...so I imagine the book to be worth a read.

I'll get to it after I finish War & Peace... which may take a few years. At least I DID see the Russian directed movie of that before I finished reading, so I wouldn't get disapointed in the movie.
