ilovestrategy -> Biggest Blunder in a strategy game. (10/25/2010 3:25:11 AM)

About a year or two ago I started a thread asking what was everyone's biggest blunder in a strategy game and I'd like to ask again to see if anyone has any new experiences since then. I've played a lot of games since then and still, nothing can replace what I did in Rome Total War.

When I was conquering Hispania, I was so successful I started to get cocky. Too cocky. I went on a gamble, took most of my troops out of my border cities and tried to knock out the remaining 2 barbarian armies in one swoop. As I was heading toward one of their cities one army met me head on while another came as reenforcements on my left side in battle mode.

Even though I was outnumbered 2 to 1, I thought I could take them. I planned on charging the army ahead of me, wipe them out and turn to meet the army on my left.

I ended up running away with my general and a couple of battered units and my tail between my legs. Remember those towns I mentioned that I stripped down the garrisons? The barbarians had a field day with them while the Senate got mad at me for neglecting their missions while trying to build my forces back up to regain the parts of Hispania that I lost.

It took me a while to recover from that fiasco.

Have you guys done anything to top that? [:D]

I played h2H

Doggie -> RE: Biggest Blunder in a strategy game. (10/25/2010 6:02:55 AM)

I played head to head Close Combat games with Axis fan boys who set ground rules such as limitations on the number of tanks and then deployed fifteen tigers on pet maps. [8|]

Obsolete -> RE: Biggest Blunder in a strategy game. (10/25/2010 6:39:05 AM)

I'm not sure I understand that. If someone intends to build Tigers, Panthers, or Kings, then it's to HIS ADVANTAGE that HIS opponent wastes as much resources as possible on tiger-bait.

* Edit *

Ok never mind, I just realized now we were talking about BLUNDERS, haha. Yes, I just woke up now.

Q.M -> RE: Biggest Blunder in a strategy game. (10/25/2010 7:10:51 AM)

I drank beer playing CC GW hot potato H2H with Andrew. He swore.  I laughed.

Never, ever on any account think that a Rolls Royce AC is the be all and end all of terror machines on the Western Front.

No sooner than I had advanced this sole spluttering iron clad along the muddy track spraying his troops with withering MG fire, down comes the HA and destroys my only hope of breaking a stalemate on the strat map.  Here endeth the advance, The Kaiser was furious!  No beer for you!!

It's called ambitions versus capabilities.  Dont drink and drive on the tactical level in a strategic H2H game.

My biggest strategic blunder in a game was mentioning that I bought yet another one, to she-who-must-be-obeyed(tm).

You guys are noobs in the screw-up department. I remember the very first email game that I ever played and boy was it a disaster. It was back in 2002 and was a game of Strategic Command. I think my opponent was Titan Warrior from Australia. Well I was playing the Allies and had just launched my massive Overlord invasion of France when things quickly went south. After my initial landing I realized that I had not left room for my HQs to land in the next turn because of overstacking and my entire invasion force become unsupplied. The German forces had a field day and I was humiliated.[:(]

In my own defense I must say that I was at the height of my divorce and wasn't sleeping or thinking very clearly at the time but after that experience I swore to never play against another human while drinking or getting divorced.[:-]

My biggest strategic blunder was loosing the Philippine Islands as Japan in early 1941 in a PBEM game of WITP. I had been bombing Manilla regularly with IJA bombers and attacked a couple turns in a row thinking that surely by that point Manilla was worn down enough to take it with a shock attack. Boy was I wrong. I whittled my troops down to token strength and then my opponent shock attacked and drove me out of Manilla. Next thing I knew he drove me into the sea at Lagaspi and Appari where I had started. BIG MISTAKE! [:o]

WITP-AE, Downfall scenario versus the AI, first couple of turns. I sent severals TF of 3 CV each to Japan to bomb the crap out of their airfields - and found out the hard way that they have an unholy number of regular and kamikaze bomber groups there, supported by a metric buttlod of fighters of varying quality and pilot experience.

Result: 4 CV sunk, 8 CV damaged, about 500 Allied and 1000 Japanese aircraft destroyed, all in one day.

Ketza -> RE: Biggest Blunder in a strategy game. (10/25/2010 7:54:17 PM)

I was playing a huge game of squad leader the summer of 1986 at MIT. There were maybe 10 of us playing and it was a scenario depicting a Soviet airborne assault across the Dneiper river in 1944. We were using thousands of counters and some 20+ battalions worth of units engaged at one point.

My "character" was a Russian airbone colonel that commanded a Soviet paratroop battalion. (He was a 10-3 for those of you who have played SL)

Well I chose to drop the battalion near a hill overlooking the river where there were some Romanian security platoons stationed.

My Colonel counter drifted in the wind and seperated from the main force and landed on top of a Romanian bunker were It was killed in a hand to hand combat with a mediocre band of rear echelon old men and boys.

My "character" lasted less then 2 minutes in a scenario that was supposed to last several days worth of playtime.

After much laughter and ribbing from my Axis opponents the judge gace me a replacement counter which was a 9-2 Lt because well he felt sorry for me...

To this day my old wargaming buddy calls me the 2 minute wonder.

SteveD64 -> RE: Biggest Blunder in a strategy game. (10/25/2010 9:32:56 PM)

The new Hannibal game.   The AI places Genoa under siege.  I take Hasdrubal and 9 units from Spain and cross the Alps.  A warning pops up that they are subject to attrition and do you want to continue.  I'm like, sure, I can afford one or two losses.  Six units later, the three remaining units land in Northern Italy and are slaughtered by the besiegers, Hasdrubal is killed and Carthage never recovers.

Feltan -> RE: Biggest Blunder in a strategy game. (10/25/2010 10:21:02 PM)

A long time ago in a distant land .......

I was a teenager overly confident in my new found opinion of my opponent's skill as a German player.

I was playing SPI's "War in the East" as the Russian. I decided to make a monumental stand on a general Kiev-Minsk-Riga line of defense.

After the smoke cleared, I had a couple dozen divisions remaining and the German army simply had a marching exercise all the way to the Urals.

That was about 35 years ago now, and it remains the last time I "surrendered" in a game.

Regards,
Feltan
