frank1970 -> Win7 64bit and editors (11/4/2010 3:32:52 PM)

Hi,

I tried to use the editor, but my machine (Win7 64bit home premium) only tells me I try to use a wron file version. Does anybody know a workaround?

Thanks

TonyE -> RE: Win7 64bit and editors (11/4/2010 5:13:18 PM)

For clarification, the H3/ANW scenario editors will run on 64-bit versions of windows.

On the HC side the most straightforward approach in your situation would be an in-place upgrade to Win7 Pro or Ultimate where you'll gain the XP Mode virtual machine where you can run the HC SE (Scenario Editor).

There are many other approaches, one of them being to fund a 32-bit SE.  That'd make me happier [8D]

frank1970 -> RE: Win7 64bit and editors (11/4/2010 6:43:40 PM)

the virtual XP machine runs on Win7 home, too. It just isnŽt supported.
IŽll give it a try.

frank1970 -> RE: Win7 64bit and editors (11/5/2010 2:10:20 PM)

After several hours of work I have to confess, that I found no workaround.
Has anybody some good advice, other than use an old computer [;)].

Do you mean to say above that the editors will not run on Win 7 64 bit?

On my XP system the HCE scenario editor button starts the Scen Editor, on my win & system it doesn't.?

thanks
rick

TonyE -> RE: Win7 64bit and editors (11/8/2010 2:37:13 AM)

What I'm saying is that the HC scenario editor will run on any 32-bit flavor of Windows and no 64-bit flavor of windows.

The H3 scenario editor(s) will run on both 32-bit and 64-bit flavors of Windows.

Ah - ok, thanks I was misreading the above post thinking H3 was HC!

Thanks

TeTeT -> RE: Win7 64bit and editors (11/16/2010 12:07:44 PM)

I worked around this problem by installing a Windows XP that had a license not bound to hardware in a VirtualBox on Windows 7. The virtual machine runs the HCE editor nicely.

JudgeDredd -> RE: Win7 64bit and editors (11/16/2010 12:38:00 PM)

Can I ask why an older version of Harpoon (H3) has an editor that works in a newer (64bit) version of Windows, and the newer version of Harpoon (HC) has an editor that does not work on the newer version of the OS (64 bit)?

I'm not fussed, as I will not be using the editor - but I'm curious why this is the way

First, HC is older (it is Harpoon 1), H3 derives from the Harpoon 2 codebase.

The HC scenario editor is a 16-bit program and there was never enough money or interest to convert it. Unfortunately the conversion is not an easy process. I've tinkered with it myself and have a version running but not really useable. Plus I don't have a ton of interest since I can easily run the SE in a virtual machine.

JudgeDredd -> RE: Win7 64bit and editors (11/16/2010 2:48:30 PM)

Oops. Sorry for that. I thought HC referred to Harpoon Commanders Edition (and the E was just omitted) - I now see it means Harpoon Classic

TonyE -> RE: Win7 64bit and editors (11/16/2010 2:55:59 PM)

Lineage:
Harpoon (1) -> Harpoon Classic -> HC97 -> HC2002 -> HC Gold -> HCE -> HUCE

Harpoon II -> Harpoon 3 -> Harpoon 3 ANW -> Harpoon ANW ->HUANW

Being a rebel I call anything in the 'Classic' line HC.  I'm starting to come around to calling ANW ANW instead of H3 but I have my days of rebellion.

KEYSTONE07950 -> RE: Win7 64bit and editors (11/25/2010 3:11:12 PM)

This is the game requirements from the product page:
Game Requirements
Windows 98 (ANW only)/2000/XP/Vista/7
800 MHz CPU (1 GHz+ Recommended)
512 MB RAM (1 GB Recommended)
32 MB Video Card (64 MB Preferred)
16 bit Sound Card (DirectX 8+ Compatible)
3GB Temporary space free on C: Drive during installation, plus 3.5 GB free, uncompressed hard drive space on installation drive
DirectX 9.0c or higher

Why then am I unable to open the Ultimate Commander edition scenerio editor?  I have windows 7 64 bit.
I didn't pay for this version of Harpoon to have to search for "workarounds" to all the editor issues.

I am sorry I made this purchase.  Wasn't this tested on all versions of windows 7 before release.

Also, where is the data base editors that work on Access?

Little Beavers -> RE: Win7 64bit and editors (11/25/2010 8:55:37 PM)

FWIW I have Vista 64-bit and my copy runs just fine.

Do the editors run? The editors are allegedly only running on 32 bit. keystone is specifically complaining about the editors not working on win 7 64 bit...not the game in general

KEYSTONE07950 -> RE: Win7 64bit and editors (11/26/2010 1:20:44 AM)

Regarding Ultimate Commander Edition - scenerio editor will NOT RUN. Platform editor runs.

Regarding Ultimate ANW - 1) I get colored bands as the game starts up - not during play.
2) From the program group - when I click ANW scenerio editor I get:
TEMPORARY VERSION EXPIRING 2/01/11
ATTEMPTING MATRIX GAMES SERIAL NUMBER VALIDATION
THERE IS AN ERROR WITH YOU SERIAL NUMBER AS ENTERED. PLEASE CONTACT
SUPPORT@MATRIXGAMES.COM FOR ASSISTANCE. ERROR CODE -1
HARPOON WILL NOW EXIT.

Ooops - forget ANW #2 - if I "run as admin" I no longer get the TEMPORAY VERSION EXPIRING 2/1/11 error.

I program the game on Windows 7 64-bit and yes, it is tested on Windows 2000 and up. The specifications given to Matrix have a special note on compatibility and I think you see that in the manual.

Why are you sorry you made the purchase? Running a virtual machine with a 32-bit version of Windows isn't rocket science anymore and if you really want to edit scenarios we'll always find a way!

Thank you for your response.

You said that the compatibility was noted in the manual!!!!!!!!! If it was noted on the game specs I WOULDN'T HAVE PURCHASED ULTIMATE. THE GAME SPECS ARE MISLEADING.

As far as it not being rocket science running a virtual machine - how patronizing. If I knew I needed to run a virtual machine I WOULDN'T HAVE PURCHASED ULTIMATE!

I find this scenerio editor problem disturbing. Matrix should provide a fix.

TonyE -> RE: Win7 64bit and editors (11/26/2010 3:59:19 PM)

Even Matrix makes mistakes and obviously they didn't update the product specs page when they updated the information in the manual.

A 'fix' as you call it to create a HC scenario editor that will run natively on 64-bit versions of Windows is not economical (we're talking over $100k and at least a year's time, minimum) so I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for that.

This appears to be angering you greatly.  To that end you may want to request a refund from Matrix.

The editing of scenerios was for me one of the most enjoyable aspects of Harpoon. So yes, I would like a refund.

Erik Rutins -> RE: Win7 64bit and editors (11/26/2010 4:21:38 PM)

Hi Keystone,

The system specs generally apply to the game, not to additional tools. I agree though that we should have made this more clear. If you really find that having to do some special setup to get the Commander's Edition Editor working in Windows 7 is a show stopper for you, send me an e-mail at erikr@matrixgames.com.

Regards,

- Erik

Yes....it all works. I have a Toshiba L550D Laptop running 64-bit Vista. AMD Turion X2 Dual Core 2.2GHz system with 3 Gig's of RAM. I regularly play at the higher resolutions. It could be a video card issue although I can't speak for Keystone's problems since I've never had them. I will OCCASIONALLY get some color trouble on the scenario resolution screen but it's random and rare enough that I'm not reporting it.

KEYSTONE07950 -> RE: Win7 64bit and editors (11/27/2010 2:24:24 PM)

The Ultimate Commander Edition scenario editor does not run on windows 7 64 bit.

VistaJohn1 -> RE: Win7 64bit and editors (12/2/2010 5:04:18 AM)

The editor vs the scenario editor could be the problem? Have to use full screen at 1024 by 768 for editor, but can use window and very high resolutions for scenario editor. My colors are strange for the editor, but not the scenario editor. All working well on win 7 pro 64. Had the color problem with Vista 32 and a laptop off and on, used a custon color setup and saved as default to fix. Time consuming to setup, but worked fine once done. Have not tried to set a custom color setup with the editor and win 7 pro 64, not really a problem for me.

VistaJohn1 -> RE: Win7 64bit and editors (12/15/2010 5:56:07 PM)

Seems I read the manual and should not have! The color problem is not present if set for window at max settings allowed (1908 10xx)! Runs fine. If I try to edit the country list, the country.dat file is trashed! This problem has been there for some time. Need to find a access 2003 runtime to use the other editor. Wont work with my access 97 anymore.
