maybewar -> Help? I want to be a wargamer (8/22/2002 2:15:05 AM)

I picked up a magazine the other day and started reading about war games. I thought that they sounded kind of cool so I checked this site out and downloaded a free wargame. I am now completly over my head. If someone could tell me what wargame I should start with (preferably free) that would be a great help
Thanx

Welcome,
If you want to start with a free wargame, you cannot do better than Steel Panthers:World At War.It comes equipped with a manual and excellent tutorials on different facets of the game in the scenario section. There is an SPWAW Training Centre here in the forums, where you can avail yourself of the experience of the SPWAW veterans.I have never had a question go unanswered.
Regardless of how silly I may have thought it sounded.
I never felt I was being patronized at any time.Never.
There are many talented people here who are creating new maps, scenarios and campaigns for this game all the time. How many free games do you know of that inspire that kind of creative effort? What you will find here friend,is a community of people who are passionate about wargaming, and will go to great lengths to share that passion with others. So welcome to the finest wargaming community on the Internet.
Regards,
Fontenoy.

If you get a serious itch for a game this link will take you to a good business that sells original retail copies of quality software wargames (because they can't always be free downloads hehe).

http://www.cdaccess.com/html/pc/49war.htm

I recently bought a copy of Steel Panthers 2 Modern Battles from them, and I was pleased. They have all the titles you will hear from us wargamers.

These sites also have some good offerings/options to think of as well.

http://www.wargamer.com/

http://www.battlefront.com/index.htm

http://www.theblitz.org/index.php

These sites are home to superior games and there are free downloadable demos there as well.

Titles I suggest you contemplate in no specific order.

Any game that begins with Steel Panthers (and ends with WaW 7.1, or MBT, or WW2), or SP2 or SP3.

Strategic Command (Battlefront)
Operational Art of War (look for current version called Century of Warfare).
Panzer General II
Combat Mission (I am not a specific fan, but it has a large fan base at Battlefront)

If you like Steel Panthers WaW you want to look into getting a Mega Campaign from the Matrix store.

I strongly suggest looking into the game Combat Leader under development.

Uncommon Valour is currently one of Matrix games strong products (have not seen it, but heaps of glowing praise must mean something:) ).

But the final word (and not because I am here too), you won't find a more helpful wargaming forum out there.
If you have a problem with a game (any game) you can find a fan for it here likely. But tech troubles will be faster aided in the tech forums normally.

And the General Forum on Matrix is a place to be eh.

Buy a Mega Campaign from Matrix. You'll get SPWAW, the best WW2 Tactical game ever made.

If modern is your cup of tea, go over to www.wargamer.com and download SPMBT.

If 19th Century is your poison, go for Age of Rifles, Civil War Generals Or the Battleground series.

If mediaeval is your game, get Mediaeval 1 and 2.

Ancient try the Great Battles of the Ancient World, Alexander, Hannibal and Caesar.

Welcome to the war, oke. Have your dinner and go by the ops hut to be briefed. You're hitting patrol tonight.
