I'll give a few of my non-scientific observations. First of all realize that even should the entire squad had been wiped out, the wiped out squad could've been on the down side of the national rates, while the new crew could've been on the upper side. I for one have never noticed whether my crews were entirely wiped out or not, but I have seen enough of the time where into the 3rd battle, or further, of a campaign will see where an AFV which had been knocked out had suddenly dipped to some 20pts. lower than everybody else so that's proof that it is working at least part of the time. In the case of a unit being dispersed or knocked down to one or two men surviving, consider the random experience generator for what you're going to get. If your 70 exp. rifle team was down to 2 men, their new exp. will be largely dependant on the new squad value. For example, if my national average were 70 and the new 8 men were 50 exp. my new unit might show something like a 55-60 exp., whereas if the new 8 men were 80 exp. the squad might actually go up to 75 exp instead of going down as we usually expect. This makes sense to me, though I'm not technically sure of that, but it does cater to the idea I've had sometimes, that if one of your units starts off unusually on the low end, it might be better sometimes to try to make them the sacrificial unit, hoping their replacements are average or better.
