Skywalker -> Black Holes behavior (11/7/2010 11:30:31 AM)

Hello people, need a tip on black holes.

During past games I managed to find a safe haven for my research station just outside a Black Hole. Now, i was astonished when i discovered, that it's nearly impossible to survive near one because every few second there is a strong puls of I-dont-know-what that depleting my shieds and damaging ships.
I understand, that it is radiation pulses or smth like that, but there is nothing about it in Galapedia or game itself. Forum searches made no positive results here too.

Can anyone explain me how to read the BH data regarding thisfenomena correctly and how not to loose any ships for it?

Its not the Black Hole!  You are near a galactic storm, they are shown as lightning flashing on the map and extend quite far (over several systems sometimes).  I once had a colony in a system on the edge of one, everytime it was around one side of the system all the ships became disabled, but when it was in orbit on the other side it was fine, I had to end the game because I couldn't get rid of the colony and it had piles of broken ships from all factions around it [:D]

Woodman you could have just removed the colony using the game editor.

I think you are probably right about the the problem Skywalker is experiencing.

Hmmm....
Looks like you are right - there are 2 BHs and one SN not far from each other (all of which where chewing my ships in the past) - and lightings sparks not far from all of them, however it's not clear why other ships in that region (between BHs and storm) are able to fly with unscratched shields...
Is there any way to indicate precise borders of storm?

PLEASE SOMEONE DELETE THIS POST!!!!!

No way to find precise borders, they extend further than it looks like on the map too.  I *think*but I'm not sure, that ships flying through at warp speed are not affected, only those that drop out to normal speed (or stations of course).  I've got Explorer ships stuck and disabled sometimes, they go down ever so quick, then Constructors come in and repair then and remain almost unscathed.  It seems when you have less parts on the ship the engines are more likely to go, which is the killer!

Ok. Thank you very much. That settle the question!

Merker -> RE: Black Holes behavior (11/7/2010 6:52:26 PM)

I think the storms might have activity and inactivity periods. I had a similar situation with one of my acquired bases in the middle of one of those storms. Sometimes the supply freighters to that base would get disabled, but it didn't happen all the time, most ships returned unscathed. But I always had a couple of ships floating like wrecks around the place just a couple of kms from the base that could repair them(how ironic, don't you think). The C-ships ignored the pleas for help I think, since it was a far away place and I never did see those ships repaired as far as I can remember, I might be wrong though.

Cheers

It's probably worth mentioning also that once you achieve sufficient shield technology your ships can ride through these storms undamaged. I'm not sure what level of tech this becomes possible, but I think the storms still do the same amount of damage, only the shields recharge fast enough to recover.

Merker -> RE: Black Holes behavior (11/7/2010 7:54:16 PM)

it's also worth noting that fleet battles in storms are extremely fun, if you can get the enemy to follow you there. Imagine fields of wrecks[:D]

Igard -> RE: Black Holes behavior (11/7/2010 8:23:23 PM)

I can't remember ever having a battle in one of those storms, sounds like a job for the editor.

Merker -> RE: Black Holes behavior (11/7/2010 8:34:32 PM)

That's the fastest way to do it, yep. Let me know how it works out[8|]

PS: Anyone wondered how all those debris fields filled with working ships came to be? Ancient storms that moved away hehe[:D]

Don't want to create a new topic..
How can I increase ACTUAL research output?
