Panama -> Engineers (11/11/2010 6:22:13 PM)

Here's a question I've wondered about for some time.

Do engineers have any effect on combat when attacking a fortified location? From experimenting I would have to say the answer is no.

A good question... but I think they do (maybe it's just me imagining it, but I always beef my assaults against fortified positions up with some Pioniere :)

So far as I understand, combat task include the construction and the attack of fortified positions, no? After all, those ants are helpful in crossing a river and using them in a stack to negate the across the river assault defence bonus for the other guys, no? :o

I guess it's testing time... If I got a result and can back it up with a SitRep, I'll let you know. I hope/am sure, that Bob X or Ralph (in case he's not too busy for the official 3.4 patch), Larry or Silvanski might provide an answer...

None that I'm aware of. I haven't done any testing or anything but I can't think of a little tiny thing that the engineers could do to effect combat besides helping other units dig in. I've attacked with engineers before ( in an emergency ) and they DO have combat power in and of themselves but my rule of thumb is that engineers don't attack things. They are too valuable to fix bridges, etc. to loose in combat.

They don't effect ANY combat(s) that I'm aware of. Maybe they boost the morale of the cannon fodder?

I'm not surprised. Thanks for doing that.

I guess if someone wants combat engineers they need to make a unit that will do the same thing as heavy artillery, unfortify the enemy, have a high AP strength becasue satchel charges and flamethrowers hurt and yet have a very low defense strength since they have to get upclose and personal to make their stuff work.

Satchel charges could be modeled with a heavy shell weight and low rate of fire. Then give an AP strength equal to say, a 155mm howitzer. And the defense strengh should be low, say 5.

BTW, Collin, you were right to suggest that the only way to make things work correctly was to edit the equipment database. Sorry I said you were bastardizing the game. [sm=00000007.gif]

As far as I know engineers will only be helpful to speed up entrenchment

As an engineer I would tend to disagree. I am quite helpfull at helping my kids drive their mother crazy.

I guess that would be more of a combat support role. [;)]
