Onime No Kyo -> The Happy Pinatas (11/17/2010 11:40:59 PM)

Hello everybody (I'm sure there arn't that many of you) and welcome to the AAR.

Steve (AW1Steve) and I are playing against John (John 3rd) and Scott (scott1964). They are both from Colorado and are very good and experienced players. Incidentally, they can stop reading and get the heck out of this thread.....now. [:'(]

As for Steve and I, we have absolutely nothing in common except sheer bloody mindedness. We have played several games of the original WitP against each other and found them to be invariably bloody but very, very enjoyable (speaking for myself, of course, although my partner might agree as well) during which I have acquired great respect for Steve both as a player and person and am honored to fight with him side by side, as it were. We have also noted that we have a very similar playing style and tend to think along the same lines strategically. We hope that this will prove an advantage in this game.

This is my first game of AE anything aside from about a month's worth of turns I ran against the AI as I only bought the game a month or so ago after taking a very lengthy pause from vanilla WitP for personal reasons and not having the guts to return until now. Steve has quite a bit more experience, both with AE and WitP in general and has been an invaluable resource for information and a great sounding board for my silly ideas.

The premise of this game is simple. There are no house rules. We are all gentlemen and adults and can agree that we can enjoy this game without throwing up preemptive bulwarks of house rules (which always struck me as a sort of PBEM prenop). Therefore, all the parties involved have agreed to keep themselves honest, not engage in any gamey behavior or to misuse the weaknesses of the system in any way. There is the caveat that any notice of gamey actions can and should be called out to the offending side, but I'm personally sure that this will not become necessary.

Other than that, the field is open. As Steve is fond of saying, the gameyest part of this game is that one person can be Field Marshal, Admiral, President, Prime Minister and God the Almighty all in one.

As for the setup of this AAR, I have noted elsewhere previously that I am no fan of cutting and pasting the combat summary. Maybe my partner would be willing to take care of that side or either of us could simply provide a synopsis. I'll try to fill in the color commentary as the muse moves me.

Questions, comments and jokes are always welcome. Rude and/or obnoxious behavior is not.

Enjoy.

Clever title; four well-known forum members; and a spanking new AAR to follow.  [8D]

With John on the other side, the game is sure to be violent.

Which mod or scenario are you playing?

The reason I've never cut and pasted the combat summary is that I've never quite figured out how. I probably will some day, but not for the tactical benefit of Chickenboy![:D]

Yury and I have very different backgrounds and areas of interest. Strangely enough they complement each other. I won't say where those areas are , because they will give too much info to "you know who", whom I'm currently engaged in another deadly struggle (2x2 PBEM)![:D]

We've had hours of preperation and planning , via email, phone callsand instant messaging. My hopes are to increase this to tele-conferencing next. (Assuming I can get the newly purchased camera and other gear functioning!).To plan any better or more extensively would require one of us to purchase an airline ticket (probably me, as I very much doubt Yury will visit the land of Beef, beer, bombers and Corn-huskers!). [:D]

Onime No Kyo -> RE: The Happy Pinatas (11/18/2010 12:57:30 AM)

Dec. 7 1941

The morning of December 7th brought the long-expected news of war to Kuantan.

Nicholas Wright was shaken awake by his orderly. As he struggled to open his bleary eyes, working against the fatigue of a full day occupied with the minutia of his unit's relocation, the flight and in significant proportion the aftermath of the party thrown to mark their arrival, he noted terrified look on the young enlisted man's face. All thought of sleep and fatigue instantly vanished. He took and unfolded the slip of paper being held out for him. A hastily scribbled text received by radio from Kota Bharu several minutes ago. Battleships. Cruisers. Bombardment. He was instantly out of his bunk and still working on tightening his belt as he rushed out of the room.

In the radio tent located on the edge of the field he ran into George Whitney, commander of the Wildebeest unit which shared the field with Wright's Swordfish.

Between the two of them, with brief inputs from the radio operator, they established that virtually nothing was known or clear. The enemy force, if the conflicting reports still being received from various stations around Kota Bharu were to be averaged, consisted of somewhere between two and eight enemy battleships, up to 20 cruisers and destroyers too numerous to count. As yet, however, there was no report of landing, or even troopships being seen.

There was no word from headquarters either. Whitney's 223 Group had been ordered to move to Singapore several days prior and was likely still aboard their train somewhere south of Malacca. The skeleton crew which was supposed to be manning the now otherwise empty group headquarters in Kuala Lumpur was not responding. Nor was there any response from Wrights 224 Group in Singapore itself. Wild rumors and suppositions about enemy agents and sabotage were already circulating around the base. That, however, did nothing to assuage the issue at hand. The unit of Buffalo fighters which was supposed to have arrived this morning was conspicuously absent. But likewise, their absence or present whereabouts did not diminish the weight of the choice facing the two officers.

After brief consultation, Wright and Whitney found themselves to be in complete agreement with one another. Whether the enemy knew it or not, their units presented a powerful punch against a seaborne invasion. With just a bit of luck and laxness by enemy lookouts, they might sneak their not inconsiderable force of torpedo bombers within launch range of the enemy ships. But even if luck was not on their side today, the two officers agreed that they must do their duty. The enemy has been located and must be struck.

As the sun rose over the dense foliage of the trees surrounding the airstrip, six Swordfish and eight Wildebeest made their lumbering way into the air, forming up over the jungle, and hefting their deadly cargo of torpedoes towards the enemy fleet.

Postwar Japanese records yielded only a single passing reference to an air action over Kota Bharu that day. No planes returned to Kuantan. There were no survivors.

Very nice start to the AAR. You're definetly a talented writer.

Onime No Kyo -> RE: The Happy Pinatas (11/18/2010 1:36:26 AM)

To provide a brief snapshot of where the game is after 10 turns.

- The Japanese launched 2 days worth of very damaging attacks on PH.

- There are significant enemy land forces in the PI with bombing continuing daily.

- Most of N. Borneo has fallen aside from Sambas, which is unlikely to withstand a determined attack.

- No significant combat in Malaya as of yet. The enemy landed at Kuanatan several days ago but found only a BF unit. The blocking units at Alor Star are in contact with leading elements (likely light and/or armored units, but no firm data is available) of an enemy column from Singora. The enemy has spent the last 4 days demonstrating actively but has not attacked. Air recon shows follow-on forces, perhaps as many as 3 infantry divisions, approaching from the north.

-The enemy has crossed the causeway into Hong Kong but has not attacked.

-Several sharp naval skirmishes have taken place in the Celebes Sea, where a light enemy carrier and several surface groups were known to be active, resulting in the loss of several transports and the USS Houston.

-A light Japanese surface force, consisting of 1 CA and 3 DDs had entered Balikpapan harbor (possibly intending to bombard or chasing cripples) several days ago, where it was met by the RN's Force Z. The only Japanese ship to leave was a DD. Force Z suffered no significant damage.

- The enemy force unloading at Kuantan was attacked by bombers operating from Singapore with significant success before the base fell. Similar raids launched the following day were met by fighters operating from the Kuantan airfield. Escorting Buffalos and Warhawks of the AVG gave a good account of themselves against the Japanese CAP but bomber losses, both to flak and fighters, were severe.

-The China front has been stable. Aside from daily air attacks, the enemy does not show much activity.

-An enemy force of uncertain strength is believed to be approaching Wake Island.

-SigInt suggests a possible landing at Lae in the near future. Naval recon has not located any enemy threat in the immediate area.

-Enemy submarines are known to be operating off Singapore and the West Coast of the US. At least one submarine was sighted heading north through the Strait of Malacca. ASW forces operating from Indian ports have been placed on alert. Minesweeping forces are likewise in a state of readiness.

Thank you Mike. [&o]

Incidentally, the Pacific war is not exactly my area of historical expertise. Come to think of it, neither is the Western side of the whole war. [:D]

I know that quite a few of you guys are accomplished amateur historians (and some not so amateur) and avid readers. If any of the drivel I'm likely to write sticks in your "historical craw", please dont hesitate to let me know. I will be happy to correct my errors, both because I want this stuff to sound at least somewhat plausible and because I would love to learn the details myself.
