xnavytc -> ASW info (11/22/2010 5:57:17 PM)

the numbers on a ship info screen for ASW goes from a low of 1 to what?what is the max number for the ASW for a ship

Terminus -> RE: ASW info (11/22/2010 6:05:22 PM)

A ship's ASW rating is equal to the number of ASW weapons onboard. If it has 2 depth charge racks and 2 depth charge throwers, its ASW rating is 4.

thanks terminus, was trying to decide if i should use a YP for asw or surface combat, it has a asw # 1, which should i use it for, any ideas??

Terminus -> RE: ASW info (11/22/2010 6:11:18 PM)

It's an ASW ship.

There are 13s on the IJN side in the later war.

But note that just looking at number does not tell everything. Sometimes ships with ASW number of 4 is better than the one with ASW of 6.
It depends on the device, year and side in the conflict.

Terminus -> RE: ASW info (11/22/2010 8:54:24 PM)

True.

Yes it does. CO and crew EXP as well.

But, a big but, those 13s are hell on wheels to USN subs.

xnavytc -> RE: ASW info (11/22/2010 9:00:52 PM)

yeah they are bull found that out the hard way

nashvillen -> RE: ASW info (11/22/2010 9:07:22 PM)

For the Japanese the Ukuru 2/45 class has an ASW of 17 for a maximum. This ship class has 16 Depth Charge launchers and 1 3 in A/S Mortar

For the Allies there are late war Patrol Craft, and DEs with ASWs of 11 maximum.

As said above it is the devices. Look them over in the editor. By mid 1943 you see the mousetrap and hedgehog become farily common-and effective. Also the Mk 7 depth charge ususally upgrades to the MK 7lm (?) which deals out some serious whupass. From what I have seen, two solid hits with these will sink a sub about 80% of the time. The mk 6 usually upgrades to the mk 9 which although less powerful takes a big jump in accuracy.

The Allied patrol frigates and DEs are the most deadly but it is my fleet DDs that are making the most kills. Probably due to experience as their ASW rating only a six or eight. I fear the Japanese late war stuff as well. Basically if you are the Allied player and not advanced enough that your subs are operating under some decent air cover, you can expect trouble.

In WITP it was time for Japanese celebration whenever a 3inch mortar got a hit. I don't expect them to be any better in AE. They were not very sucessful weapons.

Either I just have hit my unlucky week or some unknown magic date in the game as Iīve lost FIVE subs to ASW within only a couple of days in my PBEM in 12/43. It took the enemy more than halve a year to sink five of them before 12/43. Now I know why people are saying the sub offensive comes to a halt in 44 because you lose more subs than you sink ships. Glad my subs did quite well a couple of months in 43 when the dud rate was at least down to 50%. As long as they keep attacking escorts or dedicated ASW TFs and as long as it takes 250 torps spent to actually hit one I donīt have much hope for the silent service. Have to find some forward bases for the USN bombers then.
