What is on your war novel Christmas list, if you HAVE already read it? I need something to give my brother...

Alright, since some here know something about this kind of stuff I have a favor to ask....Theres a book and I cannot remember the name...It deals with a alien invasion of earth and somehow vampires end up helping humanity against the aliens...Anyone know the name or the author?   Would be greatly appreciated

I think you are looking for "Out of Dark" by David Weber. It's his latest and the plot sounds pretty similar to what you are asking about.

Try "Old Man's War"  and sequels by John Scalzi. I really enjoyed those novels.

Try Allen Dean Foster's "The Damned" trilogy. So long as you can overlook the author's "WAR IS BAD" moralizing/lecturing, it's a very good read.

Yep, they were great reads. For anyone reading this thread, if BAEN books published it, then chances are that I have read the book, or at least looked it over.

If you are looking for a mankind-triumphant sort of novel, then this is not for you, otherwise try out John Varley "Red Thunder", "Red Lightning", and "Rolling Thunder"...

I loved the Lensmen series by E.E. Doc Smith. That series has got to be at least 60 years old though.

I think Webers' book is a new one..This one came out a while ago I believe...But since I read all Weber pretty much I'll look into it....Thanks

EDIT: read the amazon stuff on this..It sounds like it....Maybe I read a preview somewhere back in time and mixed it up and thought it was an oldie.....Lots of negatives on this one though, based on fan reviews..oh well....

Another great series is the Jason wander series by Robert Buettner, the first book is called Orphanage

Perhaps you mean 'The Madness Season" by C. S. Friedman, where a single surviving vampire decides the hegemonic succession of the conquerers?

A timeless epic struggle of supposedly spotless good intentions versus absolutely depraved beings. About the third time I read the series (in my teens), I began to notice that the shining knights' armors were somewhat rust spotted. I refuse to poor mouth the series beyond that observation. There was an amusing post on rec.ats.sf.written newsgroup several years back which elaborated the crimes of the Kinnison family against sapient life, from the Eddorian perspective...

If you liked that, then you might like Dean Ing "Systemic Shock" and the sequels...

Another kid hero series is of course Orson Scott Card "Ender's Game".

The oldest kid hero novels in science fiction so far as I know were all written by Robert A. Heinlein. Of them, the one which I like best is "Have Space Suit Will Travel", closely followed by "Citizen of the Galaxy".

I never had any use for the peace-nick philosophy of "better slave than dead". The best use for folks who think that way is... well, no telling who is reading this, so I will shut up before I commit political incorrectness...

that is one of my favorites, even went back and bought it again when I wanted to reread it and couldn't find it

(I think the Starship trooper movie took more from that story then from Starship trooper book)

more of a War/Fantasy then a War/Science, but you could look for the Black Company books, twisted story but good (Glen Cook)

the General series is also good, mainly anything by Drake is good :)

Twisted I agree, the honor of the regiment is pretty dumb when honor requires attrition to the last man and folding of the colors, as occurred in one of Glen Cook's novels..

I bet you liked "The Dragon Never Sleeps", a fine novel with an interesting ending, after much buildup. The most interesting side show was the Sarge who had to survive being dumped into an alien ghetto...

Nope....It doesnt sound like CS Friedman....One other thing I remember about it...It had the "hero" deployed in the Balkans(I think)

Hi.

Try any of the INHERITANCE, LEGACY, or STAR CARRIER trilogies by Ian Douglas. All 7 of them are great reads.

Also any of the STARFIRE novels by Steve White and David Weber. Also all great reads.

For vampire books, has anyone read the necroscope by Brian Lumley?  I thought they were interesting until there were too many of them for me to keep up with.

David Weber is good - he really knows how to describe a good starship battle.

I'd also recommend David Gerrold - his Starwolf series wasn't bad -esp the first Starhunt. For a couple of one off's Richard Meredith - "we all died at Breakaway Station" and Glen Cook -"Passage at arms" - its a rip of "Das Boot" in a sci-fi setting but well done.

I aslo really like Richard Morgan - his Takeshi Kovacs series was great. Pity I heard he won't do any more with that character.
