planner 3 -> DRM ???? (12/1/2010 4:31:47 PM)

Hey gents help an old fogey out......after reading about this DRM (?) stuff, I gather its a digtal regiustration of sorts. If I am correct how do I a novice buyer know its required or in the package ? I definitely do not want to purchase any games with that feature. TIA... planner 3 (aka Chief before restoring HD)

Over at wargamer is a whole section on DRM

http://www.wargamer.com/forums/tt.aspx?forumid=236

At the bottom set the time filter to from the beginning.

JudgeDredd -> RE: DRM ???? (12/1/2010 5:33:07 PM)

You really just need to research each purchase. It's not that DRM is wrong - it's more that some methods are downright intrusive and can prevent enjoyment of a game - sometimes prevent playing at all...and when that happens, the companies are all too quickly saying it's your computers fault and that's that.

for example, Matrix DRM (DRM - Digital Rights Management) is the use of a serial key. When you install a game from Matrix, you are required to put this serial key in and if you don't or don't put the right one in, you cannot install the game (or patches). Other DRM sorts are "phone home" DRM which means the computer sends your "licence" back to a server which then authorises the game. One of the worst ones, used by Ubisoft on some titles, is the phone home each time you load the game (they may even phone home continuously while playing - I'm not sure).

There are many types - you really need to research games before you buy. Some are harmless and unintrusive - others are downright a pita.

I'm not sure if companies are legally obliged to tell you what DRM is being used - and if there isn't then there should be!

Greybriar -> RE: DRM ???? (12/1/2010 9:50:46 PM)

It's like JudgeDredd posted--you need to research each title. I usually check DEAMON TOOLS, but it isn't always 100% complete and correct.

Good luck finding a game you like that is 100% DRM-free. [;)]

Yeah remember back in the 80's when we had to use those wheels or find the x word on page x, paragraph x, line x? I remember one golf game on the c64 you had to plug this little device into the back of your computer for the game to run. SSI had a bunch of DRM schemes back then.

junk2drive -> RE: DRM ???? (12/2/2010 2:10:31 AM)

I've still got the boxes with those wheels. Probably the keyboard overlays too.

Steel Beasts PRO still uses that dongle scheme these days.

KG Erwin -> RE: DRM ???? (12/2/2010 2:42:26 AM)

Honestly, the requirement to having serial numbers in order to upgrade games isn't a problem. I don't own a game in which imbedded DRM software has caused any problems. The horror stories I've read seem to be from companies whose mania for security goes a bit overboard, or whose customers are just as nuts about their own systems. The fault goes both ways, so (1) buy games only from companies you trust and (2) read the fine print in the agreement BEFORE you download the game. It's as simple as that.

JudgeDredd -> RE: DRM ???? (12/2/2010 6:54:49 AM)

No-one (specially me) was saying the requirement to enter a serial number was a problem. I was merely stating it's Matrix version of DRM.

jomni -> RE: DRM ???? (12/2/2010 7:21:29 AM)

The worst is Starforce.  Early versions install something in your computer that eventually destroys the ability of your drive to burn and read discs as time goes by.  Dunno how the current versions work.

Well I used to agree with that - Starforce did indeed wreck my computers ability to read the DVD. A complete rebuild was all that cured it - but that was AFTER replacing the DVD unit as I assumed it was faulty. For that reason, I spent many an hour on forums telling people to steer clear if I heard them talking about a game that had Starforce.

However - whilst I resisted buying DCS Black Shark on release (it uses Starforce), I eventually listened to people who were running the game and gave it a try and eventually purchased it. It's been on my system for well over a year and I have had no issues at all with the game or the DRM. So on my end at least, there have been no issues. Also, I haven't read of any problems with DCS Black Shark and Starforce.

Be careful.

JudgeDredd -> RE: DRM ???? (12/2/2010 10:22:55 AM)

That isn't entirely fair (and I do find it difficult to use that phrase when talking about Starforce tbh) because it doesn't mention what game it is. Definitely early versions of Starforce were very problematic - all I was saying was that I am unaware of problems with the Starforce used in DCS Black Shark...I haven't gone looking admittedly, but for previous versions of Starforce, you would be considered unlucky if you missed a mention of it on the internet

Lützow -> RE: DRM ???? (12/2/2010 10:33:40 AM)

I might be wrong, but afaik the starforce triple A technology doesn't install intrusive drivers on your system anymore, but is rather a serverside tool to verify and limit software activations.

So it's basically the limited online activation scheme that SecuROM and that other French DRM compoany use?

junk2drive -> RE: DRM ???? (12/4/2010 6:02:56 AM)

All the games I have are either CD check, No CD check, serial number for install, and open source free games.

There is no need to succumb to DRM that is more than the above.

You know, even if Starfarce is a "safe" DRM these days I still refuse to buy any product which uses it no matter what anyone says.. I had to many issues way back when with the initial versions of it that I refuse to support any company which uses Starfarce DRM.....

Same here.

JudgeDredd -> RE: DRM ???? (12/4/2010 8:08:18 AM)

I'm just putting that out there as the "other side" to the tales of woe.

Damn straight and until they pay me for two burnt up cdroms that their program destroyed I will never buy or recommend a game with starforce on it. It literally made both of them stop reading and even when I removed starforce, reformatted my hard drive they still never worked again.

rwenstrup -> RE: DRM ???? (12/4/2010 11:54:44 AM)

DRM...the computer software industry seal of approval for companies on their way to extinction...

sabre1 -> RE: DRM ???? (12/4/2010 4:09:23 PM)

Serial number DRM is fine by me. I always order a physical CD, unless it's just not offered. I refuse to purchase any other type of DRM scheme.

Esims "Steel Beasts Pro's" method is fine too. It doesn't rely on making a connection to the internet. I don't own it, but I'm fine with that method.

Eagle Storms Studio or Battlefront I won't touch and now with JT's games I won't even bother looking at them. I don't care how many activations they give me or how many computers they will allow me to install on.

Schwerpunkt has NO DRM scheme. It's yours period. I like that level of trust.
