GeorgeJ -> Complete Newbie (12/4/2010 11:42:38 PM)

Hello everyone. I just purchased and downloaded WAR IN THE PACIFIC ADMIRAL'S EDITION. HELP!!!<g>
I took a look at the manual (PDF) and on page 16 it suggested "please refer to the Tutorial Guide that is placed on your hard drive when the game is installed". Well, I went into the folder "matrixgames/WITPAE" on my C drive which is where the other stuff for the game is located and couldn't seem to find the tutorial guide. Needless to say I don't have a disk because I bought the game as a download. Anyway, I decided to chance it. I didn't see any scenarios in the scenario selection screen which seemed to suggest that they were tutorials so I just chose the first one. I got a bunch of screens and some music and some casualty reports and stuff was clearly happening (reports about ships sinking at Pearl Harbor, I think) but absolutely no indication of menu options. The program appeared to be on auto-pilot. I could move the mouse around but I couldn't *do* anything - there was nothing to click on. I finally got out of the program by CTRL_ALT_DELETE to start a Task Manager, and then told the task manager to terminate the prpogram. Not a very encouraging start! I don't want to conclude at this point that I just wasted my money. Any information any of you out there might have for me which would let me learn how to actually play the game would be greatly appreciated. FWIW, I am running the program on Win 7 home edition.

Welcome to the game first ... you haven't wasted your money.
The official tutorial is still being made.

Here are some video tutes I made http://sites.google.com/site/n01487477/Home?pli=1
which might help with some of the mechanics ... more later (when I have free time)

Play small scenario's first against the AI like Coral Sea or better yet Guadalcanal. Did you have AI V AI set cause it seems like it - if the computer was doing most of it ...

Sounds to me like you selected Scenario 1 which is a Grand Campaign and you had Historical First Turn On.  Historical First Turn will execute the attack on Pearl and other Japanese attacks with no input from the player.  Results at Pearl will vary from zero to all BBs sunk plus a lot of damage to everything else.  I learned by playing the Guadalcanal scenario.  The consensus is to play a small scenario and focus on a particular area.  TF formation, planning amphib invasions and such.  When you get that concept down, restart and learn another area.  When you are ready, then tackle the Grand Campaign.  The tutorials by n01487477 are a great place to start too.  Also read the AARs thatare ongoing.  Saurdakar has a great AAR for Allied vs AI.  Last ask questions on the main forum.  Most here are ready to help with your questions and will rarely give you a RTFM answer.  Have fun and when you are ready, advertise for an opponent in the opponents wanted section.  Hint: If you enjoy PBEM, learn the Japanese side and you'll never be short of opponents to take you on.

Play first some small scenarios to get clear idea of game mechanics. [8D] Steer clear from Grand Campaign before you have familiarized yourself with interface and some critically important points. Grand Campaign is long-time project and it can be incredibly frustrating first, especially if not familiar how game handles some aspects of operations and logistics.

Of course, when WitP originally arrived, I played tutorial in it once and then straight to Grand Campaign. [:D]

First of all, welcome to WITP-AE and the forum. About a year ago I was in the exact spot you are in now. When you first start this game, it is totally bewildering! But stick with it and you'll find that is could be the best game you ever bought. Definately not a waste of money!

Here's how I would recommend starting to learn the game (from one newbie to another):

1 - Start the game: first, you'll see the "Loading" screen as the game loads itself, then the Matrix intro (press escape to by-pass the intro), then the "War in the Pacific" intro (press escape again to by-pass). The next screen you should see is the "Main Menu" screen.

2 - On the Main Menu screen, you'll see a round selector switch. This switch deermines which side you will play (Allies of Japanese), and which side the computer will play. Select "Japanese Computer", which means you will be the Allied side.

3 - Also on the Main Menu screen, you will see on the right side a series of red buttons. Click on the one that says Scenario Selection.

4 - A new screen will appear titled "Scenario Menu". You should see a list of numbered scenarios on the left side of the screen. Click on "004 - Guadalcanal". This is a smaller scenarion centered on the Guadalcanal campaign. Next, click on the red button that says "Select Scenario".

5 - A new screen will appear that is titled "Scenario Details". Click on the red button that says "Start Scenario".

6 - After the scenario loads, you will see the game map centered on Noumea. This is where you actually play the game. As Allies, your units are green and the Japanese are red. Just look around the map. You'll see islands with bases on them, bases with troops on them, Task forces at sea with ships in them, all sorts of stuff. Just screw around with the units you see to familiarize yourself with the game elements. During a game turn, you will able to give these units orders to move about, load troops, etc.

7 - At the top of the map is a row of icons that control the game. The one all the way on the left is the "Save Game" command. This one lets save the current turn into a numbered "slot" you can save up to 200 turns this way, if memory serves me correctly, The icon all the way on the right is the "End turn" command. You press this to end the current turn. When you press this icon, the commands you entered are executed, the Japanese AI moves the Japanese units, and the turn is "resolved" with any combat that may occcur being resolved.

There George, that's the way I figured out the game. Trial and error mostly. Sadly, there is no tutorial, but the manual is of course useful, as is this forum. The people here are always willing to answer questions. Feel free to ask anything you want.

The game you just bought is a strategy game, not an arcade game. It is VERY detailed, and you will have to learn a lot of details to play the game well. I have exerted the effort and found it well worth while.

Good luck,

Paul

Amazing !!! Many thanks. I was in the same boat as GeorgeJ.

I'd bought AE and was looking for the Tutorial mentioned in both of the PDF manuals.

Then I came across your post and the link you provided (http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=2260137) (Sorry, should be (http://sites.google.com/site/n01487477/Home?pli=1)). Going there I found all the work you had done - very illuminating and extremely welcome.

I shall now explore, experiment and learn.

Once again, many thanks.

Regards,
