Graycompany -> Russian or German (12/7/2010 8:09:39 PM)

Which side are you going to play first, and why?

Cavalry Corp -> RE: Russian or German (12/7/2010 8:11:08 PM)

I will only play axis as I have to save the west from Stalin :)

Bolger -> RE: Russian or German (12/7/2010 8:11:35 PM)

For sure... Germany !
A quick start and after a year and an half, a hard way for survival!

Dr. Foo -> RE: Russian or German (12/7/2010 8:15:56 PM)

I will play as Axis with the Axis it is exciting from the first turn as I race toward objectives against a running clock and then trying to hold on for dear life against a Soviet onslaught.

I will play as the Soviets only after I get good (if ever) as the Axis.

kirkgregerson -> RE: Russian or German (12/7/2010 8:21:58 PM)

I will play Russian first ... ummm, who am I kidding.. [&:]

Will be playing the Axis Juggernaut first. Who can resist rolling those power panzer armies into the Russian hinterland with all that spicy BBQ sauce and the pickle. Oops, must be hungry. Mixing up my thought of WitE with a McRib from McDonalds.
[:'(]

sol_invictus -> RE: Russian or German (12/7/2010 8:22:38 PM)

Any self-respecting wargammer always plays the Axis when gaming the Eastern Front. What is the reward for winning as the Soviets?

AZKGungHo -> RE: Russian or German (12/7/2010 8:24:10 PM)

I have to admit that when and if I get the system down I'm looking forward to playing the Axis late in the war, love those desperate defensive battles against overwhelming odds!!

But like most others I'm also looking forward to play the early war scenarios as the Axis, and then the Russian too.

blastpop -> RE: Russian or German (12/7/2010 8:25:40 PM)

Russian- always more challenging... Any smuck can invade Russia, the challenge is to defend it against German aggression. [:D]

stormdeth -> RE: Russian or German (12/7/2010 8:26:42 PM)

I will play the Axis against the Communist Hordes first. Besides, it will be much more fun in the early game.

malfid -> RE: Russian or German (12/7/2010 8:35:10 PM)

Soviet*, of course. The desperation of shattering losses and wholesale retreats, followed by the tenuous balance of the mid-war and then, ever so slowly, a triumphant turn-around in one's battlefield fortunes. It's an underdog story; the best kind of story. There's no miracle in Germany's many triumphs during 1941-1943 across the Soviet Union. The miracle is the story of Soviet survival.

Nothin' finer than grindin' the Wehrmacht to a fine powder.

Lützow -> RE: Russian or German (12/7/2010 8:51:08 PM)

Germany, as always. Would feel wrong to fight my fellow countrymen.

Maulet -> RE: Russian or German (12/7/2010 9:02:26 PM)

russians, are more funny. No pain no gain [:D]

cantona2 -> RE: Russian or German (12/7/2010 9:43:59 PM)

OKW

Helpless -> RE: Russian or German (12/7/2010 9:48:02 PM)

OKW

There is no OKW.. and no German and no Russian..

OKH/STAVKA and Axis/Soviet

cantona2 -> RE: Russian or German (12/7/2010 9:48:55 PM)

OKH and Axis then :P

warspite1 -> RE: Russian or German (12/7/2010 9:57:14 PM)

Has to be Germany for me - playing the Soviets does not appeal, although I do not know exactly why. Perhaps Arinvald's point holds true - I side with with the underdog and ultimately the Germans were the underdogs. As the Russian you are expected to win.

sitito -> RE: Russian or German (12/7/2010 10:00:21 PM)

German for the win!!!!

malfid -> RE: Russian or German (12/7/2010 10:11:21 PM)

To each his own choice rings truest!

Seeing the despair in the look of your opponent when you put the hurt on those Panzerdivisionen he regards as precious as Gollum does with the Ring.[sm=00000619.gif]

KG Erwin -> RE: Russian or German (12/7/2010 10:26:51 PM)

With my forum name, you get one guess. Of course, I'll have to trade in my "Chesty" Puller avatar for Heinz Guderian. [;)]

Sabre21 -> RE: Russian or German (12/7/2010 11:55:31 PM)

I play both sides. Each side is just as entertaining as the other.

Helpless -> RE: Russian or German (12/8/2010 12:00:09 AM)

There is another always wining side in the game - scenario makers..

jonreb31 -> RE: Russian or German (12/8/2010 12:03:33 AM)

Germans. It's been a lifelong daydream to prove to the world they could have saved the west from Communism! [:D]

malfid -> RE: Russian or German (12/8/2010 12:05:52 AM)

I've already got all sorts of hypotheticals in mind, Helpless.

A war with both sides better prepared?

A war with the Soviets not having undergone the Purges?

Fantasy scenarios?

I already feel a winner. My sincerest thanks to all the developers who created and included such a powerful editor.

Very fine reason to play the Soviets malfid. Very fine indeed. But I still need to destroy the red menace. God save the west. Germany for me.

Icekill -> RE: Russian or German (12/8/2010 12:15:05 AM)

Axis always to start with, if/once i get tired or want a different challenge, i will try Russia.

I might be totally wrong and going a bit off topic, but for what i have seen in different hardcore WWII games, i have the feeling that most of grognards (specially Europeans like me) feel attracted by the Axis innovative strategies, equipment, military discipline, leaders (i mean military ones, not Hitler) and war domination at least early in the war.

On the other hand, there are plenty of USA grognards that prefer to play with USA if available, as i guess they feel more identified with their own country.

It was that way for sure when i used to play WWII Online.

About Russia... they are the red evil, who would wan to play with them? (joking on this one).

hgilmer3 -> RE: Russian or German (12/8/2010 12:17:20 AM)

Coin Flip for me --------------------->>>>>>>>>  Heads it's Germany, Tails it's Russian -------------->>>>>>>>>>>>>>   The flip!!!

Tails it is!!!! Playing Russian first!!

PyleDriver -> RE: Russian or German (12/8/2010 12:19:34 AM)

Its much easier to learn starting with the Axis. The Soviets have alot more to do than the Axis...

rjh1971 -> RE: Russian or German (12/8/2010 12:22:58 AM)

Yes do take Jon's advice unless you're playing a late war scenario.

Ahh, but do you not feel the attraction of the echeloned offensive? Of deep battle? Of giving rise to the best developed operational doctrine of the Late War/Post-War period? Do you not want to mold your own war machine over the ruins of a decreipt system? Some yearn to lead the blade of the Axis to victory. I would rather be the Soviet Hammer.

By 1945, you are in charge of the greatest military machine the world has ever seen. Majestic!

Well said, old bean ;)
