Hi!

I'm seeing some peculiar behavior with skip-bombing aircraft. The entire attack formation will concentrate on just one ship, rather than attacking a number of ships as they would normally.

For example, I have a save game with a large number of B-26B, B-25D and P-39D at Port Moresby and a number of A-20s, Beauforts and Beaufighters at Gili-Gili, with all aircraft set to attack at 100-foot altitude; the AI-controlled Japanese have a task force of six troop transports approaching Buna in clear weather, and the TF is in range of both Port Moresby and Gili Gili.

When any or all of these aircraft (in any combination) attack the TF they only attack one ship within the TF. When the whole Port Moresby crowd (100+ P-39s, 50+ B-26, 20+ B-25) attacks at the same time this results in one ship taking from 50 to 80 hits with 500-lb bombs, plus a number of strafing hits. I don't see any of the "continuous attack" behavior noted in another thread: the aircraft just concentrate on one ship.

It seems unrealistic to me that the entire formation would line up and pound just one ship, so I'm reporting this as a possible bug. I can see where the game might limit the number of potential targets in a TF based on the aircraft attack altitude; however, it's my understanding that skip-bombing aircraft would approach the target at a higher altitude in order to have a better chance of spotting the target and to fly at more fuel-efficient altitudes, and then decrease their altitude as they approached so as to keep the target in sight, just as torpedo bombers do. If torpedo bombers are free to attack multiple ships in a TF, why not skip bombers?

I think there was an earlier thread on this, but the thread refocused on a "continuous attack" problem that I haven't observed, so I thought I'd start a new thread.

Any thoughts?

I thought skip bombing occured at 1000 feet. Strafing at 100.....
Can anybody help with this?

Regular bombing at 1000 feet. Strafing at 100 feet for inexperienced LB groups, strafing AND skip bombing for the experienced ones. Pretty effective, too, except a lot of planes get damaged and destroyed and your morale goes in the tank quickly, too. Reserve attempts at skip bombing for when you really need it.

Les I did reply to you in that thread and said it's on our list of things to fix. :) I replied on the 24th to you. Once we test it to see if it is a bug I will let you know. When I say its on the list I can't tell you how soon it will get looked at though. But be assured we will look into it.

Ross... simple case of misunderstanding... :-)

I thought that this was just about you confirming "continuous
fire" bug regarding ships (i.e. about post that one other
forum member wrote in "my" thread but what didn't have
direct connection to my original problem)...
