jomni -> WITE vs. WITP (12/8/2010 9:57:15 AM)

Will WITE eat up your WITP time?
I think I hear WITE calling my name (haven't bought it yet).

d0mbo -> RE: WITE vs. WITP (12/8/2010 10:00:28 AM)

I'd say both if it weren't for the fact a human being has only time for one of them at the same time.

Arnhem44 -> RE: WITE vs. WITP (12/8/2010 10:48:51 AM)

It's out?!??! Well, there goes all pretense of a work-life balance.

berto -> RE: WITE vs. WITP (12/8/2010 12:37:33 PM)

Nope. No interest in WITE. It's WITP all the way.

Puhis -> RE: WITE vs. WITP (12/8/2010 2:10:11 PM)

As long as there's no strato sweep/CAP and invincible 4E bombers can't fly every day, I'm going to byu WitE... [:D]

Buck Beach -> RE: WITE vs. WITP (12/8/2010 2:37:09 PM)

I'll bite, what is WITE?

morganbj -> RE: WITE vs. WITP (12/8/2010 2:41:39 PM)

Gary Grigsby's War in the East. Released yesterday.

Sardaukar -> RE: WITE vs. WITP (12/8/2010 2:56:18 PM)

I am currently addicted to closed beta test of World of Tanks. [:'(] So no time...maybe after Xmas.

Schanilec -> RE: WITE vs. WITP (12/8/2010 4:24:35 PM)

I think I'll hold off on WITE for now. Looks to be an enhanced TOAW. Waiting for the released Campaign Series to arrive in the mail. Any day now. Quick and easy game between WitP-AE turns.

Xxzard -> RE: WITE vs. WITP (12/8/2010 4:56:42 PM)

I'll admit I haven't played any game like WITE, but my first thought is that the lack of WITP naval combat will really reduce the excitement of the game for me. It's simply a first impression, and may be wrong, but judging by the ground combat model of WITP, I don't know if I want to play a game that is almost only ground combat.

Nevertheless, any prospect of a new "WITP style game" sounds pretty enticing.

This is the real difference for me. The combined arms approach of WiTP:AE cannot be replicated by a ground and air-only theatre, particularly if air warfare is extrapolated.

bradfordkay -> RE: WITE vs. WITP (12/8/2010 5:10:50 PM)

I'm a nut about naval warfare, so WITE just doesn't grab me like it should. Maybe after I retire... if Matrix is still in business then (and I survive that long).

Buck Beach -> RE: WITE vs. WITP (12/8/2010 5:53:45 PM)

Thank you. I also will pass, just too much WITPAE (with all the modder's enhancements) to learn and my real love/interest is in that theater.

cantona2 -> RE: WITE vs. WITP (12/8/2010 6:04:30 PM)

Got both but it seems that WitE has a steep learning curve. No more AE games for me until I learn the ropes in WitE. That said it will not affect my currently ongoing games

SuluSea -> RE: WITE vs. WITP (12/8/2010 6:51:48 PM)

I'm going to learn WITE in my spare time between AE turns. I've been messing with the tutorial scenario and have to admit it's a hill to climb to learn the game but nothing like WITP at first glance. Worth what it costs as far as I'm concerned.

sfbaytf -> RE: WITE vs. WITP (12/8/2010 7:32:09 PM)

Alot depends on your interest level in the subject. The Pacific War fascinates me more that the Eastern Front so in most respects WitP is still the tops. That being said I do like WitE alot so far. The interface and map is very well done. I would certainly like to see the WitE land model and interface ported to WitP, but that's not going to happen.

The feel is also much different. WitE is a land centric game where you have a continuous front and is a huge slugfest for the most part. WitP is more fluid and offers more strategic opportunities and chances for straregic manuver. Not saying WitE won't offer that, but I suspect once you get past the initial German onslaught and the Soviets begin to get their act together it will probably become a big meat grinder affair.

crsutton -> RE: WITE vs. WITP (12/8/2010 9:41:27 PM)

I am going to buy it. It just looks too good. But I would guess that there is about a %50 chance that my wife will leave me. Not bad odds-all things considered........

RJL5188 -> RE: WITE vs. WITP (12/8/2010 9:50:59 PM)

WITE looks too good to me...but really cant wait for World in Flames...meanwhile...its off to the eastern front while i continue to fight the Japs in the Pacific!!!

Brady -> RE: WITE vs. WITP (12/8/2010 9:56:45 PM)

Well, I played a lot of WiTE while I tested it over the summer, and I have to say it is a very good game, and a good looking game for its type. A game worth the money imo espicahly given how many hours one could get out of playing it.

Having said that it is not realy my cup of tea, I prefer more detail and smaller scale in my games, I dont mean scope, but scale, thats why I prefer WiTP, more detail and smaller scale with regard to units.

Nikademus -> RE: WITE vs. WITP (12/8/2010 10:01:48 PM)

you want a Bn/company level depiction of the entire war in the East? [X(]

Do you have to factor in any leadership or morale modifiers into this die roll? Can you put yourself in favorable defensive terrain antebellum?

I would prefer at least to have squadrons and a far less abstracted air combat model than the game has.

I would prefer a Squad leval game for the entire war in the east, but I realy dont care to play games whear the smalest unt size is a divishion its just to abstracted for me its like playing risk, thats an oversimplifacation to be shure and not entirely fair to the game, as I said for its type it is very good.

Nikademus -> RE: WITE vs. WITP (12/8/2010 10:28:53 PM)

a squad level game for the entire Great Patriotic War......(with what....GULP....12 hour turns?) you have far more time on your hands than i ever will..... [:D]

DivePac88 -> RE: WITE vs. WITP (12/8/2010 10:31:55 PM)

From what I can see WitE is a fine game, but it is not WitP-AE. So no I wont be getting it anytime soon.

Schanilec -> RE: WITE vs. WITP (12/8/2010 10:45:27 PM)

I have Witp-AE on the Vista, and Rising Sun or Combat Mission or SHIII running on the XP. (SHIV is on the Vista). While WitP-AE is interphasing. I switch to the XP and do a quick turn ot two there. Then back to the Vista. Life is good.

WitE is in the future. Maybe next summer.

I played to much ASL growing up, so all games since have been judged by that experance, and I have not found any PC game thats comes close to that detail, WiTP howeaver has kept my atention for a long time.

It would be fun to have a ASL type game that could be played basicaly at length, with a series of battles, theirs no way you do the entire war.

WiTP leval detail (or better 10 or 20 NM hexes) would be fun in the East or the Med, or anywehar else for that mater.

LST Express -> RE: WITE vs. WITP (12/8/2010 11:30:25 PM)

Most of my gaming time will remain with witp, but I'm going to get wite and find some time for it too, I hope.[:)]

amatteucci -> RE: WITE vs. WITP (12/9/2010 12:05:35 AM)

Although I recently started a new Allied campaign in WitP/AE I already got WitE and I am trying to learn the basic of the game. The problem is not game time, but reading time. I already decided that I'll continue the WitP campaign while playing WitE but I am still wondering whether I have to stop reading Lundstrom's "The First Team" and pick up "Barbarossa" by Glantz, again. [:D]

I'm reading the forum, and seeing a LOT of familiar avatars. Kind of quiet in here . . .

I'm interested too, but I used up this year's, and next year's, gaming budget on Fallout: New Vegas. I don't know much about the Eastern Front and would like to know more, but I also don't care for counters. I didn't come from boardgaming. One thing I really like about AE is the lack of counters. I can see the map, and it helps me think. A big stack of NATO symbols leaves me cold, and a big tier of big stacks looks like work, not fun. I'm sure I could learn to like it, but right now it's not a priority.

I'm also with Brady in that, from what I understand, the air war is highly abstracted, a big surprise to me for a GG game. In the case of the Eastern Front I'm not sure that was a good decision. Tanks and arty rule, but the air war, especially in 1944-45 with Soviet ground attack, was very important too.

Still, the map is absolutely gorgeous, and the counters are the best counters I've ever seen, for counters. A 400 page manual has to hint at what's running under the hood as well. I expect I'll get it some day, some how, but not soon. I don't expect Matrix will stop selling it. [:)]

Nomad -> RE: WITE vs. WITP (12/9/2010 3:25:33 AM)

I am thinking of buying it, some time in a few months. WitE( the original SPI 4 map version was my first board war game ). I like the theater and am not put off by large stacks of units. I am not sure about an abstracted air war though.
