jjoshua -> Road to Minsk, AI surprise!!! (12/12/2010 5:41:00 AM)

As I am just learning the game, and am not very experienced, compared to so many of you all, who are.

I decided to watch the AI vs AI, to see some of the basic Axis moves, to get a idea and feel for the game.

Too my surprise, I was amazed to see the Axis on all the levels from Normal to Hard never take Minsk or any other of the objectives. It managed to wipe out 'bookoo' Russian units, or surround Minsk, as well as a number of other times, get close to at least one of the other objectives on the far right.

In (Normal) mode, it just plain bypassed Minsk and made a run for the right hand side edge for the smaller objective, but never took either of them. Always saw a Russian (Decisive) victory at the end. On the other settings, (Challenging and above) it definitely went for Minsk first and foremost.

Not that I am complaining, I did learn some basic things that I was not doing, and the AI has womped me so far in this small scenerio.. so with my limited abilities, am having a good time anyways.

I am just curious if anyone has done the AI vs AI and seen it take the objectives in this scenerio?

Great game, thank you for the long years ahead to enjoy this wonderful new game.

I did one AI vs AI and the Soviets won either major or decisive. I don't think the Axis ever took Minsk.

Yeah, I wasn't expecting anything awsome, but was kinda surprised as I said before...but on another note, I did see the AI use different tactics each time it played a new game with AI vs AI.

Such a small scenerio, but was informative for me as a noob... anyways.

I mean, how much can an AI do with such limited time. Had there been one more turn, I believe 'Carnage' would have applied most appropiately, for both human and AI as the Axis.

I realize, that a human is going to do moves that a AI would not consider, but this AI from what I have been reading, is much better than most, according to those who are well versed in wargaming. And I am sure as more people play, there will be other positive tweaks to give the AI even more oomf...

I have always believed as the evolution of these games, get better and better; programmers and wargame designers as Mr. Grigsby and his group, will make the AI better and better for the industry, for many years to come.

kinda humbling to see so many, tear this small scenerio up, kinda makes one rethink his or her abilities at my level.

But then again, how else am I gonna learn. Alot of good players here giving me food for thought. Now I gotta figure out how to use it.

Hell, (pc) 'Tic Tack Toe' can throw me off course... whom am I kidding.

As far as the AI, once Pavel came aboard it allowed Gary to focus alot of his time on the AI. For most players you'll find the Soviet AI in 41 and 42 will give you a run for your money. Not really sure about the short games, I only played the 2 campaigns as the Axis, and sent Gary over a hundred saves. Each time he made proper ajustments. Good luck guys when you get into the deep water...

I tried the '41 to '45 campaign as the Soviets vs. the Axis AI and saw the same problems. The AI wouldn't advance.

Now, I switched to play Axis vs. Soviet AI and it's turn 5 - look what the AI has assembled in front of Smolensk and how the forces are deployed. Is the AI programmed not to stack? OK, I know about 'defence in depth', but this is crazy... I am waiting for my first PBEM turn, which I expect will be more satisfying.

All my settings are default but I have FoW ON, so there are probably even more AI units I haven't seen yet. Even so, with FoW ON I can see the strength and type of all of these Soviet formations...

Huh, when the hell did it switch to that type of defence? Damn it, I guess I need to jump into another game. Did you take alot of prisioners the first 4 turns?

That picture speaks volumes....All I can say is Whoa...!!!

Redmarkus5 -> RE: Road to Minsk, AI surprise!!! (12/12/2010 8:46:19 AM)

Also, look at Mogilev - it's undefended even though there is a host of AI troopers all around. Maybe a very clever AI trap?

I saw the same think at Minsk - the AI left the city completely undefended and I just walked right in, although there were AI units sitting right next to the city hex. Those units then ran away or were destroyed. Did the testers see anything like this?

I am a WiTP AE fanatic and I love GG games, so I am trusting that these issues will be fixed in the first patch.

I showed the picture to my glorious leader and he went into his bunker and shot himself LOL

I went back to check my FoW settings (which were DEFINITELY ON for the first 4 turns) and found that they had been reset to OFF for both FoW and Movement FoW. I know they were on before because I was having to move units in increments. This really spoils the fun.

Note that I played turns 1-4 on a laptop and then emailed the game to myself to get it onto my desktop. The FoW change was seen in the save game that I opened after DL from email.
