CarnageINC -> Did Cary Grant do any WitE movies??? (12/12/2010 5:51:38 AM)

I'm at a loss, I thought my love of WitP would never be surpassed but I think it has been! [X(]

What the hell am going to do with my avatar and sig, keep them up for old time sake or what?!? [:'(] I'm torn between keeping them and getting new ones...sob..sob [:D]

jjoshua -> RE: Did Cary Grant do any WitE movies??? (12/12/2010 7:43:34 AM)

I say upgrade...go for Henry Fonda, Robert Mitchum or the all time great, John Wayne....I think they were involved in a few movies concerning at least the War in the West....At least if another Grigsby game comes out, concerning the West side of things, you would be ahead of the next curve. While you at it, throw in Charles Bronson too.

No offense, I just can't see Cary Grant storming the beaches of Normandy...

JUDY! JUDY! JUDY!

PyleDriver -> RE: Did Cary Grant do any WitE movies??? (12/12/2010 8:14:46 AM)

James Garner stormed the beaches of Normandy in the "The Americanization of Emily"...

jjoshua -> RE: Did Cary Grant do any WitE movies??? (12/12/2010 8:52:47 AM)

I could handle throwing in James Garne...However, the best one for me is Clint Easwood in 'Where Eagles Dare',,,,Only consequence, he should have bumped off Richard Burton in the end, just for good measure. Even if Ole' Richard was a good guy.

Can't stand that guy in anything.

Lützow -> RE: Did Cary Grant do any WitE movies??? (12/12/2010 11:03:44 AM)

James Coburn was starring in 'Steiner - Iron Cross'. Not really authentic though. To put Yanks into Landser boots is like taking Germans for Confederates.

jjoshua -> RE: Did Cary Grant do any WitE movies??? (12/12/2010 11:10:56 AM)

That movie with Coburn was gross....wasn't one of my favorites.

henri51 -> RE: Did Cary Grant do any WitE movies??? (12/12/2010 12:58:36 PM)

No contest: James Coburn is by far the best icon for the Eastern Front - unless you want a bad guy in which case you could go for Maximilian Schell.

And BTW, although you have a right not to like it, Cross of Iron is considered by most as one of the best war movies ever made (if not the best).

Henri

Lützow -> RE: Did Cary Grant do any WitE movies??? (12/12/2010 1:24:47 PM)

Dunno, from today's perspective most of these old war movies were not very believable and some downright ridiculous. However, I enjoyed Saving Private Ryan for it's stunning D-Day scenes, and The Fall for authenticity.

There is a lot of truth in that statement.

Keep the one you have and get another with James Coburn.

John Gavin starred in a little seen movie titled A Time to Love and a Time to Die. He was a German soldier in the EF who got leave, wnt home for his romantic interlude, and then got killed when he returned to the front. I last saw it maybe 30 years ago and thought it was a pretty good movie. Maybe you can find a pic or two on IMDB.com.

PyleDriver -> RE: Did Cary Grant do any WitE movies??? (12/13/2010 3:39:09 PM)

George C. Scott playing Patton is the all time best...

Tophat1815 -> RE: Did Cary Grant do any WitE movies??? (12/13/2010 6:55:42 PM)

Check out Gregory Peck,I believe he starred as a soviet partisan leader in some vintage black and white movie in the 40's. The movie plot had a submerged bridge in it as well they needed to locate. I only saw the movie once but the plot stuck with me for about 35 yrs. Now I will probably go and research this, who knows i might use it as an avatar.

AHA! It was "Days of Glory" a 1944 film. His co-star was Tamara Toumanova.

Well only available in VHS......not to be confused with the fairly recent movie also titled: Days of Glory about the French Algerian forces in WWII.

Of course I am not German, but I always thought Coburn´s job in that movie was amazing. Given that you are [apparently] German you must know what you are talking about [:)]

As for the thread title, er, I really cannot imagine Cary Grant in the Eastern Front. Well, stalking Russian nurses 600 km behind the front perhaps [:D]

Jeffrey H. -> RE: Did Cary Grant do any WitE movies??? (12/13/2010 7:55:37 PM)

What about Col. Klink or Sgt. Shultz or perhaps that short guy from 'Rowan and Martins Laugh in' ?

LiquidSky -> RE: Did Cary Grant do any WitE movies??? (12/13/2010 8:19:07 PM)

Or Telly Savalas from "Kelly's Heroes"

CarnageINC -> RE: Did Cary Grant do any WitE movies??? (12/13/2010 10:28:58 PM)

I've decided to go with Robert Shaw, Col. Martin Hessler in "Battle of the Bulge", nothing like a good panzer commander to keep the front moving along [8D]

CarnageINC -> RE: Did Cary Grant do any WitE movies??? (12/13/2010 10:35:31 PM)

Having trouble with changing my avatar, I have another nice "Col Hessler" photo.  But perhaps at a later date.

Lützow -> RE: Did Cary Grant do any WitE movies??? (12/13/2010 10:37:08 PM)

Well, Shaw is a better choice than Coburn.

I like the Panzerlied scene from that Bulge movie.

The war will go on and on and on...

CarnageINC -> RE: Did Cary Grant do any WitE movies??? (12/13/2010 10:44:57 PM)

Yes Lutzow, I always hum this tune when planning a great panzer blitz [:D][:D][:D]

Tophat1815 -> RE: Did Cary Grant do any WitE movies??? (12/14/2010 12:27:16 AM)

Alright, alright already let me get my dinosaur brain around this now. You go from Cary Grant in "Father Goose",not "Destination Tokyo" but something obscure and certainly off the character norm for Cary Grant. You end up with the poster child of German bad guys Mr. roll the fuel drums under my tank Robert Shaw. Not a bad choice at all and a rather interesting character.

desicat -> RE: Did Cary Grant do any WitE movies??? (12/14/2010 12:50:32 AM)

How about Duval as Colonel Radl from "The Eagle Has Landed"?  His character was wounded on the Russian front.

hgilmer3 -> RE: Did Cary Grant do any WitE movies??? (12/14/2010 1:38:00 AM)

I was reading this and went off to look at Alexsandr Nevsky on youtube, then went off and watched stuff on Poland and the Battle of Vienna.  I could spend all day on youtube.

I just wasn't convinced in his performance as a German officer, Shaw IMO did a great job. I thought about Clint Eastwood in his German uniform but it had no relation to the east front.

FM WarB -> RE: Did Cary Grant do any WitE movies??? (12/14/2010 3:10:03 AM)

Damn, I was going to suggest Robert Shaw. Just so I could hum the theme from Jaws playing Carnage as Russians....

jjoshua -> RE: Did Cary Grant do any WitE movies??? (12/14/2010 4:52:18 AM)

I couldn't remember what movie Robert Shaw starred in, but seeing one of the posts above, reminded me.

Yeah, Robert Shaw definitely hit the mark as a obsessed axis tank commander. When I am playing this game, I can see Shaw's character leading the charge, even if it was to his own detriment and destruction in the long run.

Great movie Battle of the Bulge.

Seydlitz69 -> RE: Did Cary Grant do any WitE movies??? (12/14/2010 8:51:18 AM)

How about Ed Harris in " Enemy at the Gates "? Its even a East Front movie.
