Did anyone catch this new doc on the History Channel Tuesday (Dec 14) night?

It was something like a Ken Burn's doc, only much darker; it examined the rise of Hitler from the perspective of ordinary German people with challenging commentary and private film footage I've never seen before.

It's in two parts: "The Reich: The Fall" will be aired tonight, and if it's anywhere near as good as the first installment, I intend to stay up and watch all 2 hours; IMO, "The Reich" was one of the best shows aired on HC in a long, long time.

Well, the HC did lead up to the film with a pseudo-doc about "prophets" who predicted the nazi movement, but "The Reich" was really cutting edge cinema.

Hey now...There is nothing wrong with Ice Road Truckers.....It might be on the wrong channel but it is informative and entertaining.

And anyways, those shows are keeping the HC afloat, something that yet another version of "I was Hitler's Moustache" does not.......

I was suprised to see a historical show on the history channel. I just gave up even looking there. I fell asleep after about 30 minutes, too bad I didn't have the DVR set up.

But "Ancient Aliens" and "Prophecies of Nostradamus" ???!!!?? - what has that garbage got to do with history?

Fortunately our local channel hasn't gone completely bad but it seems to be getting there [:(]

I watched the Rise but forgot to watch the Fall.  I'm sure it will be re-aired, because my cousin was in Bible Battles and they replay that constantly.

It was definitely an interesting show and the home movies were interesting to watch.  I couldn't believe the one story about the guy who said he was lectured by a Jewish lawyer about how great Hitler was.  The Jewish lady argued that nothing bad would happen to the Jews under Hitler and then three days later or so, they passed the laws outlawing marriage between  German and Jewish, outlawing sex between German and Jewish, and I forget the last law.  I was thinking, "How clueless was she?"

I think they were finally "clued in" after Crystal Nacht, but the Reich would keep 90% of all assets of exiting Jews, assuming they had somewhere to go, which wasn't the case for the passengers of the St. Louis: they were turned away by Cuba, Canada and the US.

IMO, "The Reich: The Fall" was as good as "The Rise".

Re the HC's Ancient Aliens, ETs gave Earth the "swastika" -- or whatever it was called in sanscrit -- and the Reich learned to use it's secret occult powers to create wonder weapons like the V2!

I kid you not: the show actually made that claim only one day after HC aired, "The Reich: The Fall."

BTW, what we know today as the swastika is actually a stylized sun wheel common to many primitive cultures; in it's dextro and levo-rotary forms, the swastika has more in common with the concepts of "ying and yang" than the laws of thermodymanics.

Lol ! - Does that mean the US space programme was run by little green men (via Werner von Braun!) [:D]

You're quite right about the Swastika though- culturally quite ancient (and respectable) until the Nazi's appropriated it.

Not necessarily - Richard Evans in "The Third Reich in Power" describes a very gradual move to the full on assualt on the Jewish population - initially just small things like banning them from certain lpaces and jobs moving on to more and more exclusions and bans. at the start certain people, like ex-servicemen were exempted. Then eventually even that category was reduced to ex-servicemen with bravery decorations. And then finally complete deportations to concentration camps. Mind you that's just the legal situation. Evans' conclusion is that behind the scenes there was always a strong unofficially sanctioned campaign of violence.

"The Rise" Whatever Ancient Aliens called it? I think it was called viagra. The powers weren't all that mystical, but it did increase social standing, activity and acceptance. The secret was lost in that Berlin Bunker until fairly recently when a drug company was able to decipher a hidden message in a picture of a V2 rocket blasting off. One of the great historic mysteries waiting for the History channel to yet reveal.

IMO, that gradual move culminated to a full-scale assault on Crystal Nacht when an "unofficially sanctioned campaign of violence" became official overnight: Germans saw firemen protect the buildings around burning Jewish property, but they did nothing to fight the fires.

Re "The Reich," many took the clue from CN and decided it was time to get "the hell out of Dodge" with or without 90% of what was left of their assets.

Joe D: Getting out of Dodge would have been nice, except for a little thing called an "EXIT VISA", After the Night of the broken glass, 30,000 applications were in the American embassy and only 3,000 were approved. Don't have numbers for requests in the European sector but I would assume all of Eurrope would/could have come to 6 to 8 times that amount. There were applications for Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Switzerland, Palestine, France, and even Spain, and the low countries. Unfortunately many that were approved were gathered up when the areas they went to fell to the Nazi juggernaut.

I didn't say everyone who finally decided it was time to leave Nazi Germany after 'Nacht could leave; even the 1,000 that manged to get passage on the St. Louis ended up back where they started.
