sztomcat -> Update-v101 betas crashed my game !!! (12/15/2010 4:15:39 PM)

I bought and installed the original WITE and it worked perfectly.

But after I installed Update-v101-Beta1, it crashed EVERYTIME a battle was resloved. There's a pop-up "WarInTheEast Application has stopped working ... A problem caused the program to stop working correctly ... ". All I could do was to choose "close program".

It had nothing to do with my save files since I tried restarting scenarios. I uninstalled the patch and reinstalled the original program. It worked fine again. Then, when I installed Beta3 (instead of Beta2), the exact same issue happened again and the application crashed whenever it tried to resolve a battle.

What is going on with your new bata patch? I am worrying this issue will prevent me from applying any future patches, beta or not.

Is this something permanent which happens on every battle for you? Can you replicate it?

sztomcat -> RE: Update-v101 betas crashed my game !!! (12/15/2010 6:02:33 PM)

Yes, it happens on every battle in WITE and I can replicate it each time.

It crashed when I manually resolved a land battle or an air mission (crashed moments after the battle report sppeared on top). If I ended a turn, it also crashed somewhere during AI phase, probably when a battle was resolved.

If I reinstall the original WITE before beta patch, everything runs perfect.

I am using Windows 7.

What scenario do you play?

Did you try to disable sounds (copy "sound" folder to "nosound")?

Haven't seen anything like that here but you may as well ready a dxdiag report as I'm sure they'll be asking for it.

Hey! "Helpless" is so helpful:)

I renamed "sound" folder as "nosound" and it solved the crashing issue.

However, since I had no sound issue before the beta patch, I would say it's still a patch bug.
Thanks.

I think it's not a patch. 1.00 has much more chances to raise CTD. Please post your dxdiag.

No other matrix game or even WITE before the beta patch has even had this sound-caused crash issue.

I just upgraded my SB Audigy 2 ZS driver, still got the same crash.

Do you want me to post dxdiag report here or send to you by email?

You may attach it to the post.

Here it is as the attachment.

Short googling gave me several issue which can be caused by ctaud2k.sys. Hard to say what might what triggers WITE to crash. From WITE point of view 1.00 had problems with CPU, so it must be some timing issue with the particular sound driver which is causing 1.01 to crash. So far this is the first reported issue with sounds.

I may suggest you:
- Check if onboard sound is disabled from BIOS.
- Check if there is no some codec pack installed which may interfere with sound driver - it was quite common problem with WITP

sztomcat -> RE: Update-v101 betas crashed my game !!! (12/16/2010 6:12:44 PM)

Onboard sound has always been disabled by the mainboard jumper. I just double checked BIOS settings and confirmed it's also disabled there.

About installed codec packs, I really have no idea if or which of them may interfere with sound driver. Can you give me some more guidance?

Anyway, this sound issue never happened in any other games or applications and didn't even happen in WITE 1.00. It is the patch caused or at least "triggered" this issue.

You can try to play with on board sound and see the difference

Some of them come with sound filters which can interfere

So far you are the only one reporting this issue. There was nothing done to sound processing. The change to CPU load could have side effect for you.

I just ran WITE again (this time with patch beta 4), and you know what? The issue was gone!

I wondered what fixed it between this and last try:

1) I installed patch beta 4 instead of patch beta 3;

2) I just installed several new Win 7 "important upgrades";

3) I set "Game Booster" to stop auto-loading (I used to let it auto-load, but exist it before run the game);

4) I entered BIOS setup screen once without changing any settings.

Anyway, thanks for the help!

Very intersting.. can you try beta 3 again? Is it crashing? Thanks for the reports.

sztomcat -> RE: Update-v101 betas crashed my game !!! (12/16/2010 7:22:52 PM)

I just reinstalled patch beta3 (didn't uninstall the game, just use beta3 to overwrite beta4), and the issue returned!

Then I installed patch beta4 again, ran the exact same savegame file with exact same click consequence. The issue disapeared!

So, it's some change you made between beta3 and beta4 actually fixed this sound issue.
