why not use the spwaw format for battles throughout history-could even use it for ancient battles-just a thought

Several reasons:

1: The rights to sell games using the engine belongs to whatever company owns the remains of SSI.

2: The basic engine is five years old, archaic in game terms.

3: The engine does not do infantry and cavalry formations well. It can do battles from the 1880s and later. I've done Boer, Matabele, and Great War scenarios. The inability to change formation, and indicate unit facing (I refer to close order days when units fired by volley, in formation) makes doing earlier battles dicy at best. Someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

Over on the Wargamer site, under Steel Panthers and related files, someone is working on an American Civil War game using the Steel Panthers engine. I'm curious about how they will keep all those troops in line formation too, but I'm eager to see their final product. Progress is slow and it may be a while but I'm very patient when it comes to ACW games. Sure wish Matrix would work on an American Civil War game.

I also thought that someone was working on a SP version of the Civil War from the Matrix site. I thought I once saw some screen shots. I might be wrong though. FWIW.
