Mus -> Logistic tips and moving up Luftwaffe units to keep up with attack. (12/21/2010 5:31:35 AM)

Can you guys give me some tips on what I might be missing with regards to logistics in this game? I am playing the road to leningrad scenario and my Panzer group 2 units started running out of supplies and fuel outside Pskov.

I also had some difficulty figuring out that I needed to move up my Luftwaffe units to keep them in range of the frontline. They can be moved anywhere on the map I control or do I need to prepare sites for them somehow?

I also missed the fact that I needed to tell my construction groups to "return to HQ" so they would redeploy automatically and convert new sections of rails, so I didn't get agood start on that until turn 5 or so is this the root of my supply problems which cropped up around turn 6?

My infantry formations seem to be maintaining their supply level just fine.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

I keep it simple, move airbases near the end of the turn after all ground attacks...If you keep transports near railheads they tend to drop more...I should say ground attacks, I very seldom do air to land attacks, unless they have a high entrenchment level...

So I can move my air units with the standard move button to whereever I want with no need to prepare any airfields there ahead of time? I know rough airfields could be constructed quickly for these kinds of aircraft but that seems a bit odd. Is that right?

Any tips on improving flow of supplies? Lots of views but few responses.

Re Airbases, yes they can be moved normally; there has been discussion about the amount of infrastructure needed to support air missions, but the consensus is they were mostly grass airstrips, not concrete based runways.

Re supply, at the end of each turn, press "c" to access the commander's report then sort the report by the DtHq column; every negative number you see means a unit is out of command/supply range. move these units into command range.

Other than that, keep converting rail lines and keep your HQs in a position that is as close to the rail head as pos, sible but that keeps attached units in command range.

In the early phase of the campaign you don't have to worry about vehicle numbers; from December onwards, you may need to put quiet sectors of the front into static mode to free up vehicles.

You don't need to tell automated construction units to return to their HQ, they do so automatically and will be able to repair another location in the next logistics phase.

Sure would be nice if the FBD units that can be used to manually repair lines were a different color or had a different symbol. They can be very hard to find amongst all the repair engineer swarming the map.

Ctrl-9 will highlight those rail repair units in red.

DOH! Is this really the case? I assumed the HQs handled those guys automatically, do we need to manually send them back each turn, or will they just do their thing and redeploy themselves as needed? Been focusing on my frontlines and have ignored those construction bns (except FBD units of course).

I've already answered that question in post # 5, but: no.

Seems to me that you do.

I had construction units sitting on the same squares and not moving for multiple turns.

Are you sure that the rail hex is already fixed and they still stay there?
Or is it a case where the hex is still damaged?

Section 20.4 has info on keeping units within supply range.

Yeah the hexes in question get automatically fixed before my turn comes up. I will double check this on my next scenario.

I just got minor victory on the road to minsk scenario. I destroyed like 50 soviet divisions and ended up in control of all but one of the objective cities, so I don't get what I needed to do to get better than minor victory.
