jalapen0 -> FEATURE REQUEST: Selectable shipset at start (12/21/2010 8:51:32 PM)

Very simple. I'd like to be able to select a shipset when I start a new game. I think a simple dropdown box with the Family name, along with a small box that displays the shipset.

I like to play different races but there are a few shipsets that I cannot stand to use. Other 4X games have this ability (MOO2 comes to mind) and I wouldn't think it would be that hard to add. Perhaps I'm wrong, dunno.

Thanks!

I second this.

A nice idea but do you realise you can do this yourself in about 30 seconds by changing one line of a text file?

No, how can I add a selection box allowing me to pick a different ship set each game by editing a text file?

He wants to be able to do it from within game, rather than having to edit the text files or create a theme.

I support this option as well.

Hmmmm....it's rather low on my desire list, but it would be nice.  I agree.

Igard -> RE: FEATURE REQUEST: Selectable shipset at start (12/21/2010 9:24:39 PM)

Good idea, just as long as the default shipset is selected by .. well .. default. If you know what I mean.

Exactly. I'm like Simulation...very low on the priority list, but I do support such an option.

I was just checking he was aware he could change ship set by theme, no need to bite my head off [;)]

I like this idea. I like to play as humans and they have the worst ship set of them all!

Aures -> RE: FEATURE REQUEST: Selectable shipset at start (12/22/2010 12:22:54 AM)

I have nothing against this idea, but as I don't have much interest in the graphics side of things it is way way down the list of what I would want them to implement. Of course you could always just change the ship graphics in the individual designs, but I understand why people would regard that as too much of a hassle.

If you change themes or mod the races.txt file, that will change the ship family used by all instances of the race, not just the player empire. I take it the intention is to change only the shipset family used by the player empire and for this to be set in the your empire screen on generating a new galaxy along with the flag design etc. Incidentally, the flag should default to whatever symbol the race uses when you change races, it currently retains its value. As many will want to choose a symbol and not have it automatically change every time they select a new race it would be nice to have a specific default option to use whatever symbol belongs to the race (and how does this work with custom races? are the flag symbols hard coded or can they be modded?). The same idea applies to any shipset family option that is added.

I just want to be clear what people are after, for example do people want this option for manually added AI empire's as well? If you want to set the family for manually added empires then the flag option should also be extended to manually added AI empires. How do people want the ship family displayed? Is there a particular design that it should use (such as cap ship or space port) to represent the entire ship family or do people want the name of the family displayed as the op suggested? I for one have no idea what the default family names are (do they even have names or is the name just the family number?) so I and most players would have to spend substantial time learning the difference before we could use this option reliably. That kind of effort can be expected when creating a mod, but in game options should generally be more user friendly. If I do start playing with modded ship families created by others there is no way I would want to refamiliarise myself with what family looks like what every time I load a new theme.

It may sound simple on the surface but even simple things dissolve into a myriad of design decisions once you start looking into them.

Igard -> RE: FEATURE REQUEST: Selectable shipset at start (12/22/2010 12:40:39 AM)

Agreed, this is pretty low priority for me as well.

Aures, good idea about the flag shapes. These are not moddable via the customization folder, but the vanilla ones can be changed, which is not ideal nor is it particularly easy because of the image format.

I think the user friendliest way of doing this would be to have a combo box on the empire selection screen with the race's original shipset already selected and illustrated by an image of, let's say, the capital ship for that shipset. This would be highlighted regardless of the player changing selection, so as to remind the player which one is the default for the selected race.

The same would go for the flag shape, the default for the race would always be highlighted regardless what flag the player has selected.

Haha! If you thought that was bad you really don't want to see me get angry then. [:'(]

Honestly, I thought you might have misunderstood his point of view though.
