CarnageINC -> Not being able to install more than 2 games (12/22/2010 7:24:57 AM)

I'm currently trying to install two games, one named 'Gary Grigsby's War in the East 1.0' the other 'Gary Grigsby's War in the East 1.01'. I ensure the directories of '1.0' and then the other '1.01' are what they say they are. Now when trying to install a fresh game of either one, the last one I install goes into both games. I did my 1.0 game first, ran it and it said 1.0. I then did a v1.01 install, ran it and it said 1.01. Now going back to my original 1.0 install it has been updated to 1.01 with only 1 update being installed in the other directory!

Looking into both directories I see that v1.0 .exe file is still 1.0. Version 1.01 .exe file is still 1.01. I try and open the v1.0 straight out of the directory using the auto run and it runs the 1.01 game. I try running the game straight with the .exe file, the one telling me its still version 1.0 and it runs 1.01. And to boot its running a separate game not the 1.01 game. I can tell because on the 1.01 music is off, 1.0 music is on. I run the 1.0 and it plays music but says it 1.01.

So installing 1 patch is copying over 2 games. Can this be looked at or did/I'm I doing something wrong here?

Looks like your trying to pull a WITP trick here to keep several versions for different PBEM games.
I don't think this is encouraged by WITE developers because of the online thingy.  Or maybe not.

I'm not trying to do any 'tricks' I'm trying to help and run down a problem with that some of have with v1.01 and units not moving the full distance.  I have a thread already on it.  But what you say does have some merit, its probably rigged that way to stop any online problems that may crop up. [;)]

Oh so bug hunting it is. Keep it up! We will all benefit from it.

Helpless -> RE: Not being able to install more than 2 games (12/22/2010 9:20:09 AM)

You can't have different installs by running installers. The last one will overwrite. At the same time there is no need. You may just copy another version to the different folder ans run it from there. Once there is one legal installation this should work.

So doing a manual copy transfer will protect it from over writing?  I'll give it a try as see what happens, thanks Helpless.

Hi all,

In ALPHA / BETA testing we used to play with several different versions at the same time (albei we didn't have the installer)....

I think this is how you can have two instanced of WitE (with different versions):

#1
Install WitE as normal via installer to, for example, "D:\Games\WitE"

#2
Rename the WitE Installed in #1 above to, for example, "D:\Games\WitE v1.00"

#3
Install WitE as normal via installer to, for example, "D:\Games\WitE v1.01" and apply the patch.

Thus now you have:
"D:\Games\WitE v1.00"
"D:\Games\WitE v1.01"

You now have single registry entry for WitE install (i.e. your legal serial number and thus this will enable WitE to run normally) and two separate versions!

And the winner is.........NEITHER! [:'(][:@][:D]  I tried both methods and using the .exe file right out of the directory they all come up as v1.01.  The patch ...."It will find you, that's all it does!" (Terminator reference) [:D]  I can't believe that the manual one isn't safe but it must be coded to open up "Gary's Game" no matter where you put the files.

Helpless -> RE: Not being able to install more than 2 games (12/22/2010 9:59:44 AM)

Copy is safe. No need to make another install. Version is taken from registry, so it will show the latest install version.

Rats...I would like to help out with tracking down this movement bug but I guess I'll leave that to the 'powers that be' for the game.  Thanks to the both of you for your help.

As Pavel wrote the version (and other data) is stored here:

"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Matrix Games\Gary Grigsby's War in the East"

Thus all is OK - you really have two different game versions in two different folders... [;)]

I understand I have 2 legal games but how do I open the v1.0 game Apollo?  It will not open the v1.0 game even if I go directly out of the directory its in.  I'm I suppose to change something in the registry to make it work?  Hell, I can't even find the HKey you got your info from....lol.

Hmmm...

What OS (Operating System) you use?

What happens if you go to "v1.0" WitE folder using "Windows Explorer" and you manually double click on "WarInTheEast.exe"?

BTW, if you have Vista / Windows 7 you can do "Run As Administrator" (via right mouse click)!

Carnage,

The version number displayed in the game screen is read from the registry, not from the exe. So in your dual setup, when you run the exe in the 'v1.00' directory, you ARE running the version 1.00 exe, but it will display '1.01' (read from the registry).

When you run the exe from the V1.01' directory, it will also show '1.01' as the version, and it in fact is 1.01.

I hope that helps ...
