After every German AI turn, whether there is a german attack or not, there are at least 40,000 soviet combat deaths. Can someone explain this please?

I am playing the 41 GC, normal settings against the German AI. I am on turn 30.

It's attrition, skirmishes/recon/etc... outside regular combat.

Cheers,
Glenn

And the Germans have less than 1000? I just don't get it...[&:]

It depends on the amount of units at the front (if you'd hit end turn a dozen times without moving anything on turn 1 of the 1941 campaign, the Axis would take significant attrition as more units are at the front) and units with higher experience levels take less attrition damage.

If you're asking about realism, I think that they are not all dead.  Both dead and injured are in the same statistic.  When I say injured, they are incapacitated and cannot fight the war anymore.  If the injury is minor and they can still get back into the fight into the future, they are classified as disabled.

If you're asking about why there are casualties even when there's no attack, units in contact suffer attrition.  This simulates small scale action while there are not major offesives being undertaken.  I believe this is a good game mechanic and reduces the necessity to order attacks for each and every unit in the front like The Operational Art of War.

If you're asking about the proportion, then that's just the way it goes. Soviets are inferior and the combat value of a Soviet Corps is roughly equivalent to the combat value of a German Division.

I generally see slightly larger Soviet losses to attrition than German.

I have suggested that there should be a change to attrition levels if 'recon' support attachments are added to a ground unit - it's detection level should decrease it's own attrition and increase that of the enemy. To be honest, I am not sure how this works at present as I'm still learning.

Also, I believe that the more units you have stacked on the front line, the higher your attrition levels will be. I think this might be a minor design flaw as it probably provides some of the impetus for the AI to defend in depth from turn 1, instead of stacking his defensive line.

You do not see the other sides attrition loses. As the Germans I normally see around 20K each turn.
