frooples -> Help! Game won't save ("ERROR unable to save into slot") (12/25/2010 12:25:42 AM)

I just purchased GG World at War - A World Divided last night and discovered today that I can't save. I've tried just about everything I can think of, but every time I try to save, it says "ERROR unable to save into slot" and then gives the name I was trying to save into. I've tried the 1.04 beta patch, and uninstalled and reinstalled. I have a few days to play right now and then life gets busy, so I'd really like a solution--I've enjoyed trying it so far (everything else in the game works, but if I can't save, I can't play, really).

I have a Dell Studio XPS 1640 with Windows 7 Enterprise installed. I'd appreciate any help I can get ASAP.

Thanks!

Kevin

ME TOO...I bought it before the holidays and hadn't tried it yet...busy...when I saw this I started a game of Spg 41 - Fall 46. Tried to save and got an error? Pretty maddening.

frooples -> RE: Help! Game won't save ("ERROR unable to save into slot") (12/25/2010 5:46:05 AM)

Yeah, and I've done a bunch of poking around now. I've reinstalled once more with the recommended folders rather than choosing the one I'd prefer, but that makes no difference. For what it's worth, there is no "save" folder in my game folder, but I have not been able to find a note anywhere yet as to what that folder would be titled or where it would be located (not to mention why the game wouldn't install it). I did try to do it myself (made a folder called "save") but it made no difference.

I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one. I couldn't find anything on Google or on the forums, so I was beginning to fear I was not going to get a solution. Of course, multiple users with a problem doesn't solve the problem--just makes a solution a bit more likely... Merry Christmas!

rjh1971 -> RE: Help! Game won't save ("ERROR unable to save into slot") (12/25/2010 9:07:58 AM)

I never had this issue, bu then again I'm still using good old reliable Win Xp rather than Vista or Win 7. Try running th egame in administrator mode.

Lützow -> RE: Help! Game won't save ("ERROR unable to save into slot") (12/25/2010 12:29:14 PM)

Considering you use Win Vista/7, switch the dreaded UAC off and don't install on the the recommended path, but on a different volume (i.e. D:\Matrixgames...).

Problem is, that the latter Windows offsprings solely give write access to My Documents and subfolders. This causes trouble for some games which were still developed for WinXP.

Merry Christmas Frooples to you too....as to Win XP...that is what I am using too so much for reliable XP. I haven't tried asking on Consimworld yet...maybe someone there has the answer.

Mill65 -> RE: Help! Game won't save ("ERROR unable to save into slot") (12/25/2010 4:15:21 PM)

Hi everyone. I got the same problem. Does anyone know where the game is supposed to save games and what filetype is used (.sav etc.)?

jwarrenw13 -> RE: Help! Game won't save ("ERROR unable to save into slot") (12/25/2010 6:45:56 PM)

Hi. I bought this game on sale and had the same problem. There is obviously some kind of glitch. After uninstalling and re-downloading, I read something somewhere in this forum about the location of the save file and checked and found out the save file was missing in my game folder. I don't know why that happened.

To solve the problem I created a "save" folder in the "dat" folder here: C:\Matrix Games\Gary Grigsby's World at War A World Divided\dat

That solved my problem. Just create a save folder in the dat folder and see if that helps.

And official answer from Matrix would be interesting though because I'm wondering if somehow something else is messed up in the download.

frooples -> RE: Help! Game won't save ("ERROR unable to save into slot") (12/25/2010 6:48:36 PM)

Hi all,

Thanks for the suggestions rjh1971 and Lutzow. Unfortunately, neither work. Running as administrator has the same effect, and I checked my UAC settings (had to look up what that was) and they were all the way down to zero control.

Based on the other comments, I'm beginning to wonder if someone accidentally posted a broken version of the program.

ReconTom, I rather suspect it's going to be a bit before the techs get on this, as inconvenient as it is for us. Everyone deserves a holiday sometime. I just hope it's an easy fix and they have a hard time drawing a line between work and rest time and just happen to peruse the forums... [:)]

Ha! That worked! JW, you rock. Thanks much. I just had no idea where to put the save folder. I figured that had a good shot at fixing it. Okay, everyone, you have your solution. Maybe a forum admin should sticky this?

Kevin

jwarrenw13 -> RE: Help! Game won't save ("ERROR unable to save into slot") (12/25/2010 7:00:04 PM)

This btw is where I found the correct location of the save file. It involved some other problem someone else had, but it did give me the location of the file.

http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=1879393

Obvously I still don't know if there is some other problem with the downloaded game file or why our save files weren't created properly. I'm running Win 7 64 bit btw. However, I played a full 39-46 game as Germany -- my first -- after fixing the problem, saving numerous times, and I had no apparent problems.

Nevertheless, a comment from an admin after they return from their holiday would be nice.

Merry Christmas Frooples to you too....as to Win XP...that is what I am using too so much for reliable XP. I haven't tried asking on Consimworld yet...maybe someone there has the answer. I am wondering however why some tech hasn't answered yet. I understand the only way you can get Matrix support is via the tech forum. Rather disppointed that they don't have an email contact for customer support. I suppose they don't want people returning the games which is what I am thinking at the moment. Seems like a gip of somekind. It is not like saving a file is cutting edge feature.

This forum is unfortunately rather dead [:(], and haven't seen Wanderinghead for a long time here either. Now if I recall correctly there was an issue with a file in the save folder that installed by default with the game, you have to delete it otherwise you get a CTD, in fact delete all save files and it should make the trick.
This is a great game so don't despair you won't regret it, I mean it.
Save folder is: Gary Grigsby's World at War A World Divided\dat\save whereever you may have installed GG game: program files, Matrix Games...
Save file extension is: sav for games against the AI and psv for pbem games

Oops JW just pointed the right place to look at.
And it is a sticky!!! [:'(]

Glad to see new people here [8D]

ReconTom -> Re: FINALLY SUCCESS (12/25/2010 11:57:39 PM)

The response to try CREATING your own "SAVE" directory in the "Dat" folder WORKED!

So I see, Frooples, that you did the same thing. Five patches and the fix is just making one's own save file. I guess all is well that ends well and perhaps I over-reacted but it sure was frustrating.

ReconTom -> RE: Help! Game won't save ("ERROR unable to save into slot") (12/26/2010 10:03:22 AM)

This worked. Thank you. Was just so frustrating and so simple a fix...making one's own save file. I always worry about changing any shipped file structure thinking I will make something worse and compromise the game..I should have realized that if I did screw it up I could have just uninstalled and then installed over again. I was surprised that something as simple as just adding a new directory could work. My apology.

jwarrenw13 -> RE: Help! Game won't save ("ERROR unable to save into slot") (12/26/2010 5:42:28 PM)

I still hope an admin looks at this, if any still show up. There is obviously some problem that caused the save file to vanish for people apparently buying the game recently. BTW, I tried it before updating, too, when I reloaded it, and the save file was not there. So it does not seem to be a problem with the update but with the basic program being sold for download right now.

I am new to the game. I've looked at it since it came out, but my computer was old even then and I figured it would not run. But now I have a new computer and with the sale I bought this game and a couple more. I was on the edge of just giving up on it when I happened to see the thread about the save file and just on a hunch checked to find my save file and found out it wasn't there. Glad I stumbled onto a solution.

I had another problem, too, I will note, that might help someone. I could not get the game to size for my widescreen (1600x900), and it would not retain the settings I created, for example, I always turn the music off on games, and even if I set resolution at 1600x900, it would still just play in the box in the middle of my screen and would run like that but would not resize, and if I went out and came back in, all my preferences would be reset to default, for example the music would be turned back on. I decided to try to run it in compatibility mode (I'm running Win 7 64-bit) and saw when I went there that "Run in 640x480" was checked under the compatibility tab. Huh? I did not do that. The game installation program apparently did it. So I unchecked that check and did nothing else and immediately the game responded to my preferences and is running great at 1600x900. So maybe that tip will help someone. Maybe there is a note about that somewhere in the forum but I didn't see that one.

ReconTom -> RE: Help! Game won't save ("ERROR unable to save into slot") (12/26/2010 6:27:56 PM)

Thank you JW...the screen size issue is good to know for when I finally get a new computer. Now that I can "save" I will be learning to play the game. For those that do have older comptuers I would repeat that I am running and 8 year old custom-built machine with one 2.53 GHZ Intel p4 processor and 2 GIGS of RAM...so the game loads slowly the first time but when I quit and restart the game, it loads very quickly the second time because of all that RAM. And the game once loaded, plays very well and smoothly including the videos. This computer does everything I need it to do and of course I still really like XP...but alas I am sure that its days are numbered, so all these notes about WIN7 will help me later...thank you.

THAAAAANK YOOOOOU! That fixed it for me. It also fixed being able to change options and make them stick. (full screen instead of windowed. Easy AI. etc.)

I did the same as most in this thread and bought it on sale. It'd be nice to see this fixed.

Hi everybody!

ReconTom -> RE: Help! Game won't save ("ERROR unable to save into slot") (12/26/2010 7:15:01 PM)

I thought it was the DOWNLOAD too...but I also bought the disk. So one thing I tried was to uninstall the digital download and the reinstall the game with the disk....and the save directory was still not there. So the problem apparently is related to the "image" of both the download and the DVD...at least that is my assumption. Like you I hope there are no other problems with it.

silviuf -> RE: Help! Game won't save ("ERROR unable to save into slot") (11/29/2015 9:43:28 PM)

I had the same saving issue "unable to save into slot ..."; additionally I couldn't save my settings from the preference menu. The solution with manually creating the save folder works. Now I can save both my settings and save game.

This is embarrassing, it is clear that the install package is missing this simple instruction. Before buying this game I installed, let's say, an "evaluation version" :-) from the internet. Let me tell you, that install package worked like a dream.

Anyway, thanks a lot for this wonderful and simple solution. I hope that one of the developers will find and correct this issue.
