V22 Osprey -> 6 Turns (12/27/2010 1:41:37 AM)

Can I punch through this Soviet mass and take Smolensk in 6 turns or am I being too cautious? Any tips? Maybe it looks tougher to me than it really is...

Yes, you can punch through. You'll find that most of those Russians units are under manned and easy to push back. Use your infantry to punch some holes, drive your panzers through to encircle, and drive for Smolensk while doing so. You'll get there if you keep pushing hard.

Normal. The AI out of no where just formed this big wall of troops.

I actually find that image reassuring and pretty 'historical'. Much better to see than the deep wall (10 units deep!) of Soviet units I found in front of Smolensk under version 1.00.

What you see there looks very much like the historical 2nd and 3rd echelon of Soviet divisions, most of which should still be mobilising. If they stay in roughly those positions, you will have to fight three complex and very tough historical battles to get through them:

1. The Battle of Smolensk (actually a campaign) which ran for 2 full months;

- Battle of Smolensk (10 July-10 September 1941)
-- Smolensk Defensive Operation (10 July-10 August 1941)
-- Smolensk Offensive Operation (21 July-7 August 1941)
-- Rogechev-Zhlobin Offensive Operation (13-24 July 1941)
-- Gomel-Trubchevsk Defensive Operation (24 July-30 August 1941)
-- Dukhovshina Offensive Operation (17 August-8 September 1941)
-- Yelnia Offensive Operation (30 August-8 September 1941)
-- Roslavl-Novozybkov Offensive Operation (30 August-12 September 1941)

2. The Battle of Vyazma-Bryansk (02 - 20 October 1941). Generally regarded as a key first phase of the Battle of Moscow, but geographically distinct.

3. The Battle of Moscow (Oct '41 to January '42) which culminated in the Soviet winter counter-offensive.

A good mix of raw Militia units were included historically in battles 2 and 3 but they performed very poorly. The STAVKA decision to put many of these ill-equipped units in the line is still discussed as a national tragedy in Russia, I believe? Maybe one of our Russian friends here can comment?

Well I never see this stuff in my games. My guess is you didn't capture enough. Show me a loss screen... As Joel stated most of those unit are shells of units, use hasty attacks and you can envelope at will...

jjdenver -> RE: 6 Turns (12/27/2010 6:31:12 PM)

Most of those are strength 1 units. Tear them up. The Sovs are going to take massive casualties and by managing your schwepunkts well you can get some encirclement opportunities. Don't attack all along the line. Pick a couple of spots and do repeated attacks with multiple echelons of units to punch completely through.

That's my 2 cents from the cheap seats. :)
