bman654 -> Bugs in tutorial (12/27/2010 4:23:42 AM)

Here's a couple of bugs I found during the tutorial.

1. When I was told to equip my handgun and move in front of the tables and shoot the targets, I followed the directions and found that I could not shoot the targets. When I entered AIM mode and put my mouse over a target, I got a message "No Line of Sight, Unable to shoot this target". I got this for all 4 targets and was stuck. I tried walking past the tables and standing directly in front of the target but got the same message. Finally, I went and stood BEHIND the target. At this point, I was able to shoot the targets. If I walked back in front of the targets, I could not longer shoot them.

2. When I first picked up the gun and went into my inventory to equip it, I dragged the clip I already had onto the gun, filling it up with 15 shots. After I took a shot, the tutorial wanted me to reload my gun and would not proceed until I did this. Since I had already done this, I was kinda stuck again. Eventually I figured out that if I shot all 15 rounds, I could then try to shoot again and get the "do you want to reload?" prompt the tutorial was waiting on. Seems like a logic bug in the tutorial.

3. When I threw the grenade, there was not any sort of explosion sound. It was completely silent while the explosion went off. Did not seem right. Maybe related to my crappy foot step sounds??

4. Tutorial said that the tooltip for the grenade would show me its range or area of effect or something. I did not see this. All I saw was the amount of damage it would do.

5. Similarly for the guns, all the tooltip shows me is AP Cost and Max Damage, and a description. Should it be showing anything else? Useful information such as NumRoundsRemaining/ClipSize, Range would be welcome additions. I guess this is more of a suggestion than a bug :)

1. I cannot reproduce this at all. I've played through the tutorial dozens of times and I've never seen anything similar. If you can send me a saved game and/or instructions on how to reproduce it, I'll see if I can find the problem.

2. I tried to account for people ignoring the tutorial instructions by preventing actions they were not supposed to carry out. This one seems to have slipped through, so my apologies for that. Unfortunately, there isn't a simple way of preventing this, so it may have to wait for the second patch.

3. I've actually heard this from someone else, so it may not be related to your audio problem. I'll make sure the grenade isn't pointing to an invalid sound effect.

4. I think the tutorial is probably badly worded. There is not intended to be a range indicator. I'll tidy up the tutorial text on that.

5. The number of rounds remaining and clip size used to be shown in the bottom left of the HUD. I remember removing them after a complaint during testing, but for the life of me, I can't remember what the complaint was now. I do like the idea of displaying the information, but it's always tricky to balance what everyone wants. I'll look through my old emails and if I can put this back in while still meeting the preferences of the tester who complained, I'll do that.

1. First time I tried to repro it, it worked fine but along the way I encountered a new bug (see 6 below). Second time I repro'd it successfully and made 2 saves. I think it is caused by me being in the Run stance. Save2 is just after I picked up the gun (in Run stance). If you move to the tables you can't shoot. Save3 is me in front of the tables unable to shoot. If you run behind the targets, you can shoot them.

2. no problem.

3. I'll try again to see if it repeats.

4. ok

5. Would be great. Even the clip itself just has a description and name when the tooltip comes up. Would be nice to know how many bullets it has. I noticed when I used it to fillup my new pistol that had 1 bullet in it, that I still had the clip. I assume it had 1 bullet left but I have no way of knowing from the tooltip.

6. New bug - Save1 is in the tutorial just before I picked up the gun and made a save. Only problem is with this save I cannot pickup the gun. When I use the Hand tool and put my mouse over the gun, it plots a move and says it will pick up the gun. But when I click, it moves to the wrong square and then opens my inventory but there is no gun (because I am in the wrong square?) No matter where I moved or clicked, I couldn't pickup the gun.

Thanks a lot for the saved game files. I'll go through those tomorrow and see if I can crack those two issues.

I've already fixed the inventory tooltips so that they show current and maximum ammo values for weapons (or N/A if it does not use ammo.) Additionally, I set the weapon icon in the bottom left of the screen to show that same tooltip if you mouse-over it. I checked my emails and the request to remove this was because I was actually displaying the ammo over the top of the image all the time. I think enabling the hotspot on it instead is a more elegant solution, and still achieves much the same thing.

The grenade sound is puzzling me. It clearly references a valid sound, but you're right, it does not make a sound. I'll keep looking at that one.
