Having played the game for a few days now and still learning, when should I take the plunge and take Ship and Base design off Auto and start tinkering ? Whilst learning to play the game I've been so far reluctant to take much off Auto.

I don't start taking it of auto until i'm in deep, deep **** because of to many wars. Otherwise the game becomes to easy :)

I always dive right in head first of any type of game, then when I hit a roadblock I head to the manual/galctopaedia or the forums.

If you have played these type of games, you will get the hang of it pretty quickly.

It's all about personal preference
I refuse to let the AI design my ships since I have my own type of designs

I just use the AI ships until I get the first of the larger ship techs (280 I think). Then I build Cruisers kitted out to 280.

I've played heaps and still leave design on auto, BUT I design certain ships/bases myself as I see fit/feel like it.

IMO this is the best way to start; designing every single category yourself can be overwhelming.

Thanks chap that looks like good stuff. When I've played my current game a bit more I'll try this out.

I do a mix of automated and manual. I take it off auto right away, and then do the "upgrade selected" whenever a substantial tech is researched. I find that does a good job of the basic upgrading. Then I'll customize those as required - particularly the military ships and space ports. E.g. adding a long range scanner to the small space port - something the AI would never do on it's own. I don't bother customizing the civilian ships at all.

Don't find it much of a chore - actually like tinkering with the ship design. Although having drag and drop capability would make the ship design UI less cumbersome.

I leave quite a bit of stuff on auto in this game but I do all the designing myself.
