Recently I have had two instances where after destroying a pirate base I was rewarded twice.

The first was the work of a small fleet. This yielded two times the monetary reward ("treasure found in the debris"). The amounts were different for both messages. Whether both were actually transfered to my account is difficult to say.

The second instance could be more enlightening, as a single ship did the deed. This time the reward was a pirate faction joining my empire, again both times. I really received a new base and a few ships each time. I react immediately to this kind of event every time, usually scrapping the base and sending the ships to retrofit or retirement. Anyway, this means there was not just simply one duplicate or fake message involved, instead the consequences played out fully.

Moreover, the ship in question wasn't automated (a hotkeyed single ship Strike Force sorta), so I received idle messages for it - two of those in the event. Then, after killing the one remaining pirate ship in the system, the ship produced again two idle messages. I observed the action, being by the time alerted to something out of the ordinary, so I can attest there was only one pirate ship left to kill.

Both the 'pirate faction joining' and idle messages for the ship were spaced out a little. After the first pirate faction joining I had paused the game, then looked up and scrapped the new base (a chore, as the message points to the place of the battle, which in this case lets me conveniently rule out that two different battles produced the events), found the ships belonging to it and sent them to retirement. Only after unpausing the game came the second event. The base and ships belonging to this second event hadn't been in the ships and bases list before, either.

It looks almost like the game was simulating two versions of the battles in parallel.

I am right now trying to see what happens with other pirate bases with my single ship strike force (its role is that of a pirate hunter, anyway). The next one I attacked produced no reward. I don't remember right now whether the idle messages for this were still duplicated, but probably not. I then called it a day, so now the question is whether the problem persists through save and reload. I think I going to rerun the last pirate battle a couple of times (made a save before that) to see what happens.

I could upload a save game, but other then showing off the message log, could there be anything else of value? If the problem doesn't persist through a save game, there'd probably not be much point.

Your savegame would be useful to see here.

I'm particularly interested that you're also receiving two idle messages for one of your ships. I think this is the core of your problem - somehow this ship is duplicated?

So it would be very helpful if you could please upload a savegame for this.

Analysing the message log of the save game I had put aside and an earlier save leading up to the events, I now realize that when taking my initial notes I was confused and mixed things up regarding the ship which I thought produced double idle messages. It had a lot of idle messages around killing a pirate base, but all of those are completely plausible under normal operation.

Receiving more than one reward for the destruction of a pirate base did happen even more often than I thought, though. But this could rather be a feature, something I just didn't realize can happen, for all I know. If nothing is out of the ordinary with this, then don't waste your time with the save game I've uploaded:

It includes notes about where to look for double reward events and the idle messages I mistook for duplicates. Included are also two other savegames of where another of my pirate hunter ships was engaged in a combat that in my first play of the situation produced a double reward. That turned out not to be reproducible when I played through the same battle half a dozen times or more.

I think I have more on this 'double rewards' issue. (Edit: It still happens in 1.5.0.2beta)

First, it should be called a 'multiple rewards' issue. I have received up to nine rewards from killing a single pirate base. Also up to three pirate factions joining my empire and likewise up to three lost bases/ships per such event. Above I wasn't sure this isn't working as designed. But now I am pretty certain this wasn't intended.

I also have a suspicion about what is behind this. It looks like it can be caused when a swarm of fighters is making the kill.

When I first noticed the problem, my pirate hunters were of two kinds:One was comprised of single cruiser or capital type ships that were found and boarded by me as derelict ships somewhere. These usually have two or three fighter bays incorporated. The other kind of pirate hunters were small strike forces, fleets of three to five ships. Half of the latter had also a couple of dedicated carriers.

With these ships I was seeing somewhat often the two rewards per destroyed pirate base I described above.

Later I changed the makeup of my pirate hunters: I replaced the found ships with a more streamlined 'heavy' cruiser type that doesn't use fighters (the original ships were retired for tech, of course). I also upgraded my strike force fleets, greatly increasing the size and and capacity of my carriers (I am not sure, but I think I roughly doubled the number of fighter bays per carrier).

Since this change I think I never saw a double (or multi) reward when doing the kill with one of my single pirate hunter cruisers. When, on the other hand, I followed the notification popup and I was seeing a swarm of fighters circling the explosion cloud of the base, there was a high probability that there were several rewards.

Again, I have no hard data. It is more of a gut feeling or an educated guess. I cannot tell whether a fleet of fighter-less ships could, in probably very rare cases, produce the same effect. There is no guarantee that a carrier-heavy fleet will produce more than one reward or any reward at all. The overall chance of getting more then one may be 30 percent or less when a typical strike force of two carriers and two cruisers is doing the job (just a guesstimate). This could be due to the issue depending on what it landing the killing blow.

Thanks for that extra info. I've identified and fixed this bug in the next update.
