severn8212 -> Complexity of games...which is simplest to learn? (1/8/2011 2:49:12 AM)

Looking to buy a game...which are the easiest turn-based games to learn?
I see each is given a complexity rating...which is easiest, hardest, etc to learn
How are they ranked? (Basic. Intro, intermediate, etc)??

Thx
Bill

Decisive Campaigns

I would say easier games include games Battlefield Academy, or Operation Barbarossa, the easiest being Conquest!. Intermediate games include any of the John Tiller titles, steel panthers, or Advanced Tactics. The more complex and advanced titles are War in the Pacific, War in the East, or Harpoon. However, I could be incorrect but I think I have pretty good idea of what each game falls under.

Gary Grisby World at War: a world divided. Very simple, short game similar to Axis and Allies (but more complex, you have to manage supplies). Also Battlefield Academy.

I love World at War. Bought it when it first came out and I still play it.

Another vote for GG World at War, probably the easiest Matrix game to pick up from the scratch, and also one of the best and most enjoyable.

Introductory and Basic are the easiest ratings.

Hannibal: Rome and Carthage
Battlefield Academy
Operation Barbarossa
Conquest!
Democracy
Armada 2526
Commander Europe at War

Those are probably the easiest games to start with, though I may be missing a few. There are quite a lot of games that are also pretty straightforward to learn, but are still a bit more challenging in terms of the learning curve than those I listed above.

I think Steel Panthers W@W is easy to learn too. Start with tutorial and play small battles and you'll get the jist of it real quickly.

Also look for the games that have demos. Try them out and look at the added features - which Matrix is great at with regards to demos. For example, Battles from the Bulge has several video tutorials and a massive PDF game manual to describe how to play.

I would say that is an intermediate game to get into from scratch, but worth the effort as the actual level of involvement during gameplay is completely up to you.

I dunno about Hannibal:Rome and Carthage on that, Erik.

It's a rather unique game system. It took me a few runs to figure out how all the little details worked.
