Chad Harrison -> Dick Winters Passes (1/10/2011 5:42:29 AM)

Hi all

Sorry if this has already been posted, but it would appear that Dick Winters passed away on the 2nd. True to his nature, he asked that his services not be public and not be announced.

Winters was a great man who helped us understand his generation. For those who dont know who this was, he is one of the last survivors from E Co 506th PIR that fought in World War Two and was brought into the spotlight by a number of Stephen Ambroses books.

Sorry if this has already been posted, didnt see it if it has.

Chad

PS - No real link to share, a simple search I am sure would get you whatever your looking for.

I'll never have the courage of the greatest generation. My hat is off to all of them.

No [:(]

Greatest respect for the greatest generation, my grandad is part of it.

Winter's quote in BoB always chokes me up:

"My grandson asked me if I was a hero in the War, I said no son I served in a Company of Heroes." Sums up the man

RIP with your brothers in arms.

Yes, this is very sad.  I heard about it yesterday but could not confirm it, so never posted.

A very stoic and heroic man who will be missed. We could use more like him these days.

Ketza -> RE: Dick Winters Passes (1/10/2011 3:27:10 PM)

When your in the military you serve under good officers and bad. There are officers that are truly leaders and there are officers that arent worth a damn. Major Winters from all I have read and seen embodied all the qualities a good officer should have. I hope that future generations of officers can look at his legacy and learn important values and pass them on to thier juniors as time passes.

I look back at my own service and can think of one officer that to this day inspires me. As a young airman a scarred from being shot down over vietnam air force major took me under his wing and taught me about leadership and honor. He was in the twilight of his air force career and had no reason to do so. To this day his words inspire me. Major Cathy where ever you are I still salute you.

RIP Dick Winters

Does this include Axis vets?

*This might stir things up whether the answer is a Yes or a No so everyone please be civil in your replies.

And when he gets to Heaven, to Saint Peter he will tell, "One more soldier reporting sir, I've served my time in Hell".

It would for me.

Just want to mention he's certainly not forgotten here either, one of the cities he helped liberating (Eindhoven in the Netherlands, where he is an honorary citizen) the city council honoured him with a minute of silence.

Now they're even talking about a statue for him there: http://eindhoven.blog.nl/geschiedenis/2011/01/10/ereburger-major-richard-winters-overleden-tijd-voor-standbeeld
Wonder if Major Winters would have liked that, but there you go, a statue. Personally I'd like that.
