rtb1017 -> Deliberate Attack Interface is cumbersome (1/12/2011 9:52:20 PM)

I feel like complaining about how heavy the diamond is that I found on the side of the road but I have to say my biggest peeve is the interface on deliberate attacks.

I have to navigate my mouse very carefully to avoid units I dont want and cannot particiapte in the attack. It feels like playing an operation board game. When you also pick a bunch of units to do the attack from multiple stacks, you cannot tell which one is preventing (due to nout enough mp) to participate, you have to eyeball eveyone and try out a combination (like playing mastermind). When you do pick the units that show up on the right sidebar, you cannot tell which nits are the one represented on the screen. I wish you could select units to participate in the attack before pressing a button to activate a Deliberate attack. Also a key for turning off and on Deliiberate attacks without clicking on the top panel would be good.

It's called the "Shift" key on your keyboard...

you cannot hit the shiift key to undo the D.A. Maybe It also is a factor that I play on my laptop.

You can click a unit you don't want in the upper right to participate in that battle.

Actually the Shift key makes doing it really efficient.

This is what you want. Just figured this out myself. Hold shift, mouse over your stacks, then toggle off those units you don't want from the list that will pop-up in the upper right. Just click the 'counter' icon and it will go away (unit not participating). Click again and it will come back (unit is back in the attack).

That is true, but it is still a clunky interface since you can't tell at a glance which units are in which stacks. Thus, in dense situations, you're constantly going back and forth, trying to figure out which units, from which stacks you want to use.

Then again, maybe I just like to micromanage too much...[;)]

Well, I just hold down the shift key and mouseover every thing even close to the attack I want to make. Then I click off the units I don't want to particpate in the attank. No hand-eye coordination needed ( good point in my case [:)]) and you get a quick reference raw CV count off the display as long as you can add one digit numbers in your head. Love it.

Yup mouseover still works in this mode so it is very informative and convenient.

My favorite interface is the command line, so all GUIs are clunky to me. But they are necessary evils and have their place.

One guy once approached me at work to ask me about how I was managing to keep track of a very big software project. He thought I was bullshitting him when I showed him that I just used the command line, vim, a pen and a notebook.

True, but you can't decide which units you want involved in the attack with a glance at the upper right corner of the screen. Yes you can de-select them there... but you can not see which units are connected to which HQ/ArmeeGruppe (remember, units from different HQ's get a malus) I also would like to see the total CV, in fact, I would like to see much more detail there in the selected units area (what Leader, what stats does he have, total CV, maybe even a picture of the Leader just for flavor, etc)

Using a command line.... *you* must be getting old. [:D]

You are correct, although the current amount of info is enough, the game is not always as polished as it could be.

I have a number of pet peeves myself.

Although this is the best game I have played so far.

Ah Josh, your're right: sometimes my playstyle has me do things that I forget that I am doing (if that makes any sense at all [:D]). To me mixing divisons of different corps is so evil that I carefully maintain divison groups without intermixing. I automatically check the highlights (same/different corps) when I do anything; as a result if I "mouseover" and cross a corps boundery I know it immediately. So I either accept the penalty (virtually always) or do the mouseover again to exclude the interlopers. Since the army penalty is so much worse than the corps penalty I then exclude the divisions of a different color.

Sorry about that [:)]
