Jdog -> Question about Casualties... (1/18/2011 4:35:06 AM)

This MUST be in the manual though I have not been able to find the answer anywhere. I have noticed that, playing as the Germans, I see my casualties as one number at the end of my turn but another, sometimes astronomically higher number, at the end of the Soviet turn.

Obviously there are some casualties inflicted by the Soviets, but I have seen numerous turns now where the Germans have taken maybe 5000 casualties defending against Soviet attacks while the casualty screen shows 4-5 times that many. That takes into consideration all casualties, those from my initial turn and the Soviet turn. Anyone know where these additional casualties come from? Can there be 20,000 German casualties due to attrition? I am not even in winter yet...

Its attrition

9.5.2. FRONT LINE ATTRITION
Units that begin their turn adjacent to enemy units during their logistics phase will suffer
additional attrition losses representing low intensity combat, with approximately one-half to
one percent of ground elements in a unit being destroyed (one-half of the manpower is killed
and the other half is disabled). Combat attrition losses are dependent on unit morale, the
number of ground elements of a certain type in a unit, and the experience level of each type
of ground element. The higher unit morale and ground element experience level, the fewer
combat attrition losses. This attrition is in addition to the additional fatigue effects from being
adjacent to enemy units (9.4.1).

Don't worry, the Russians are suffering more attrition but the player can't see these figures.

Thanks Cookie Monster...I remember reading that but it didn't click I guess. That really clears things up. Glad to hear the Russians are experiencing worse Jomni. That's small consolation but consolation nevertheless...

Frontline attrition simulates the fact that those units that are on the front line lose part of their equipment and manpower as casualties done by snipers, hostile recon (units on the frontline have to do and receive constant recon operation) etc.
