We also had war plans for a war with the Royal Navy. That must be because we were secretly planning to attack the British. Wow, were we dastardly!

Not sure what week that aired, but it must have been a slow one for news to make a big deal out of one of many secret war plans.....

bradfordkay -> RE: WTF...? (1/25/2011 12:41:45 AM)

The military staff has contigency plans for war with just about anybody. If they didn't and something were to come up, just think how outraged the press would be...

YankeeAirRat -> RE: WTF...? (1/25/2011 1:12:11 AM)

This is old school news man. If you read any book on the history of the CBI theater you will read how there were rumors that Chaing really wanted some top class front line long range bombers (ie B-19, B-18, B-17, quality) to use as long range bombers against Japan. He was willing to buy the planes and pay for aircrews and maintenance folks to show up, it would have been the same deal as to get the P-40s into China. From what I have read, Marshall, Churchill, Hull, and even Stimson all told FDR to start with the P-40's and see how they do, then think about bombers. However, they were thinking of bombers like the B-10, B-18 (which were starting to become obsolete), and some short range attack aircraft like the Martin Model 167 Martin 187, or even some of the Northup dive bombers. In the end though other world events push this off until the first long range aircraft (like the LB-30/B-24's) started to arrive to build up the 10th AF. Chaing tried multiple times to buy some of those aircraft form Stilwell and each time he passed the Generalissimo off to the Department of State reps who swallowed the Generalissimo up in the bureaucracy. The best the Generalissimo's Air Force units could hope for was some war weary B-25's and A-20's

Because they're Canadians - they are constitutionally required to be nice!

The plans against the British were not entirely whimsical. There was a brief period after World War I that Japan and the UK had a naval alliance and War Plan Red-Orange was for a Pacific War against the combined fleets of Japan and Great Britain. Of course, the Japanese-British Alliance was short-lived. While extremely unlikely in an historical perspective. it would make an interesting game scenario.

Yep, this is well-known stuff. It was War Plan Red against the Brits, Orange against the Japs, Gold against the French, Silver against the Italians and Black against the Germans.

So that explains the name of Gary Grigsby's War Plan Orange game. Never knew that.

There is a half way decent, if dry book, about the creation of the war plans and specifically WPO. War Plan Orange: The U.S. Strategy to Defeat Japan, 1897-1945 I use to have it on my bookshelf till I loaned it out to someone who has never given it back after they moved away years ago.

Off topic for a little bit, I would also note that for those that play (or played) table top war games. A company called, Avalanche Press, http://www.avalanchepress.com/, published as part of thier "Great War at Sea" series of games. BLack for a war tween the US and Germany over the British Carribean islands, Then they had a game based on Plan Gold, which assumed another undeclared war tween the US and French in the Carribean, War Plan Crimison about a fight tween US and UK over Canada, War Plan Scarlett tween the US and UK over the Carribean. I haven't played any of them, but a few of my friends have; they have enjoyed them.
