sbach2o -> 1.5.0.2beta: Two minor interface issues (1/27/2011 9:31:41 AM)

Two minor issues I noticed in 1.5.0.2beta (but I skipped 1.5.0.1, so I don't know when they were introduced):

(1) Fleets no longer sorted by order of creation

Affected are the lists in the 'join fleet' context menu for ships and the drop down list box in the Ships & Bases dialog. The order in the fleets dialog is the same, but that can be sorted (I think, I rarely use this dialog). The now unsorted fleet lists look very messy and make it hard to pick any given fleet when I want to add ships.

(2) Population summary for planets in the selection panes incomplete with more than two races on a planet

To regain space for other kinds of information, the population summary for planets in the selection pane was shorted by one entry in a recent patch. Before, it could span up to four entries: the two most prevalent races, then all others summarized as 'other', finally a total population count.

Now, all is fine with up to two races, but when the planet has a third, only one 'Other' entry will be shown beneath the dominant race. This should sum up the population count of all other races, but it doesn't include the second most prevalent (it is the same 'other' as before). The overall sum is still correct, and the count for the 'missing' race can be deduced by building the difference between the two entries, however, it isn't neat.

I don't know whether there would be enough leeway for such a change, but consider this: allow up to three race icons be shown horizontally in the 'others' entry in population summary, maybe with an ellipsis if there even more races present on a planet. This way you could directly show the four most prevalent races. It could be an option to omit the count in the 'Others' row entirely for this, because this number can be deduced anyway. Then, instead of having an incorrect 'others' count, we'd have none at all. ;)
