PzB74 -> Torpedoed and sunk 4 times! (2/7/2011 9:02:59 PM)

There was a fascinating story in a local norwegian web paper today:
Torpedoed 4 times

Not in English but the story and pictures speak for themselves I think [&o]
Never heard about anyone being torpedoed that many times and live.

The last sinking was near the entrance to the Bay of Aden; accordingly German and Japanese subs torpedoed 29 ships here in the first quarter of 1944.
Not a completely risk free to sail between Europe and India even late in the war.

I think being torpedo'd once would be enough for me. [;)]

On a similar vein i heard about one poor japanese civilian who was wounded at hiroshima by the A Bomb and sent on a hospital train to Nagaski, and we all know what happened there 3 days later !

He recently died of old age somwhere in his 90's iirc. thats either the luckiest or unluckiest man of the 20th century depending on your point of view.

Blind Sniper -> RE: Torpedoed and sunk 4 times! (2/8/2011 1:00:17 PM)

Envision when he reached his last ship:

Survivor: Hi guys, I'm new here, my previous ships are all sunk by torpedo...
Crew: ...you...are...welcomed...

Reminds me of that woman who had been a governess on the Titanic, a nurse on the Brittanic when they sank and had been aboard the Olympic when it was rammed (or rammed an RN cruiser). Hard to believe she almost single-handedly wiped out a class of liners.

The Gnome -> RE: Torpedoed and sunk 4 times! (2/8/2011 4:42:15 PM)

There was another crazy story about some chinese found in german uniform at D-Day. The poor sob's were captured fighting the japanese, pressed into service, used to attack the russians, who in turn captured them, pressed them into service to fight the germans. They were captured a third time and pressed into service to defend the Atlantic Wall, who finally were captured by the americans.

Rob, you naughty boy [:-] You know a certain Mr Fry got in trouble for that [:D] You'll be getting an angry e-mail from the Japanese embassy soon [;)]

One of the men from our town was captured at Corregidor and spent rest of the war as a prisoner.
According to him, 3 times he was shipped away from the Phillipinies, and his ship torpedoed. The 4th time he was shipped out, they put American prisoners on deck, along the railings. When he got home, he weighed 105 lbs. Said he had put on a lot of weight - when the war ended, he was 86 lbs.

Yeah, decision about safe travel in Germany zone of influence seems questionable.
