Larsenex -> Starbases I discover and board... (2/7/2011 11:08:02 PM)

In most games my exporers come across the starbase. 'We have boarded it and taken control'. Ok I see, its way and the Frak out into nowhere. What do I do with it? I see that it mostly sucks but I am stuck with it. What do you do with it? Can I upgrade it to a Large Space Port? That would actually make it worthwhile as my Large SP's pack a lot of firepower and have many docks and cargo space. I might actually have a use for them (I suppose).

You all know any tricks you do when you get these starbases? Do you get Research advancements when you scrap them? What do you do with them?

I just scuttle them rather than have to worry about my ships using them for retrofitting and having to wait 40 years for the civilian ships that are queued at them to be built. :/

If they are monitoring stations I may keep them. If they are normal bases, I scrap them at once. The same with pirate bases from pirates that join the empire after killing another pirate base.

I started a fresh game today, and found a bit too many very nice, lost colonies. At one of the independents there was a monitoring station in orbit. It did have fancy equipment compared to my starting stuff, but even though it had a recreational component, it gave no effect to the colony. So it was scrapped, which was the only option. The strange thing was that it said star base, had a long range scanner, but did not have any docks.

In theory they could be useful if nicely positioned somewhat far away, but I don't think they will be resupplied. So, to junk they go for no benefit, and if I need a far away staging post, I will rather build a resupply ship that keeps itself stocked with fuel. And it can move as well...

Ah ok. Ill scrap em all right away. Thanks

If they have a sensor then they are worth keeping, mining bases are worth keeping, a simple star base with no sensor...scrap it.

You can easily tell if there is a sensor, when you find it, go to it, zoon out, and if there is a colored circle around (the color of your empire) it has a LR Sensor.

same here, same criteria as Shark....finally found something that he's not doing better than me [:)]

Wreck -> RE: Starbases I discover and board... (2/8/2011 3:58:52 PM)

The larger starbases have advanced port facilities and sometimes they can build large ships you can't yet.  If they can build, they'll be packed with all sorts of resources.  So you can use them to build some monster battleships.

They will get supplied from outside if you "overbuild" for the minerals present, but that takes a long time.  So, once you've used up the stocks of whatever resource is tightest, then delete them.

an accurate and to the point post....nice debut Wreck
welcome to the community

Thanks a bunch for that information Wreck! Never really though that you could build some megaships if you have advanced derelict spaceport.

yap, the limitation is in the construction yard component not in the level of technology per se
maybe this should be fixed though for consistency with the current tech level

How can I tell if the base can build mega ships?

Data -> RE: Starbases I discover and board... (2/8/2011 6:13:24 PM)

you check the construction yard it has and then see in the tech tree the size associated with it
