Zenra -> Thinking of investing in DW+RotS (2/10/2011 2:38:34 PM)

I am considering getting DW & RotS (like I actually have time – right) and have been reading several threads here to get a feel for how it compares to others of the genre I’ve played (e.g., the Space Empires series). I am not looking for a comparison to SE5 but would like to understand how the resources, economy and “private sector” aspects work. These aspects are intriguing to me, and reading threads like “Private Economy Questions” and some of the AARs gives some perspective. I am still curious about a couple of things, though:

1. Is there a “supply and demand” model wherein prices (or trade income) increase for low supply / high demand commodities (and vice versa)?

2. Do enemies / pirates attack private sector freighters and so destroy and/or capture the resources they carry?

3. I realize the private sector ships operate autonomously, but can / should I protect them with my state-controlled fighting ships? Or does the private sector also build and deploy combat capable ships to escort freighters?

4. Is piracy, or at least blockade warfare, a potential player strategy? That is, can I have my state ships attack enemy private sector ships with the intent of destroying, or even capturing, their cargoes?

Searching the forum for “private sector” and “economy” yield lots of results, but if there are specific threads on the economic aspects of the game that anyone cares to recommend I will appreciate them.

Thanks!

Yes there is a empire wide, and galactic wide demand system. The more trade deals you make with other empires the more revenue you make. The rarest of resources are the most valued and lucrative.

Pirates, and empires you are at war with do attack your civilian economy. However, they do not capture the cargo.

It is wise to have fast escorts on automatic to handles escort duties (I use Escort and Frigate class types for this role). Then I delegate destroyers and up for my major offensive and defensive fleets.

You can have your military forces attack other empire private sector ships, this tactic is often used to provoke an empire to declare war on your so you don't take a huge hit to your reputation, then obviously your target empire will start to hate you and eventually declare war after several warnings.

There are no capture cargo mechanisms in the game.

You can send a fleet to blockade planets as well...the AI will do this too. There is a caveat though...the AI will not allow your blockading ships to attack neutral freighters or warships, only those of the nation you are at war with. Blockades are extremely effective on planets with the ultra-rare resources (Loros, Zentabia, or Korriban) as these are expensive resources and have a big effect on population happiness.

I don't see this clearly stated yet so no, the private sector doesn't indeed order any military ships so it's not capable of protecting itself

Zenra -> RE: Thinking of investing in DW+RotS (2/10/2011 5:45:31 PM)

Thanks lordxorn, Shark7 & Data - that's exactly the kind of feedback I was looking for. Looks like I will have to invest, and then try to find some time to play around - look like a pretty cool game.

Data -> RE: Thinking of investing in DW+RotS (2/10/2011 7:37:12 PM)

Not only does it look cool, it has great potential as well. So jump on board now to be along for the (hopefully loooong) ride.
Check the modders section also, you can make it even cooler [;)]

Just FYI, Pirates do effectively salvage some cargo or at least value from ships they destroy.

Aye. Pirates get stronger the more destruction they are able to cause. That's how I've understood it.

Data -> RE: Thinking of investing in DW+RotS (2/11/2011 10:31:15 AM)

Yes, they get more ships of lower clases up to cruiser class at maximum. Not sure if the ships themselves become stronger as the buggers are to laizy to make their own designs.[:)]

They never get the chance once I find em. You can tell when there is a successful pirate group though, they end up with cruisers and cap ships.

cap ships? never saw this, one cruiser at most...maybe I should allow them to live a little bit longer

Pay a group off to attack your weakest enemies, its a fast way to build them up.

This sounds pretty interesting - will have to give it a try
