Pawlock -> Could I isolate this front? (2/13/2011 5:50:48 PM)

Playing against the AI, I have just come out the back end of the blizzard in not too bad shape. After near total collapse in the south a reversal of weather and fresh , strong Pzer elements I can see an ideal but probably optamistic chance to bag an enormous amount of reds.

Newly arrived element of 4th PA and reinforced 17th and 11th Armies are to push across river before they can reorganise and push directly SW to the coast.

Questions I have are, will it be possible to actually isolate these units being that there is one port they control to the SW? will that port be enought to supply and keep front in supply?
Will bombing the port with a view to putting it outta action have any effect?

One last thing , assuming I could turn off the port supply tap, will that mean all units become beachead supplied? and how hard would it be to destroy them if in such a state?

Since port is not on the rail all the units should be isolated.

Depends, if you entered Dec prior to 1.02 beta 3 patch then the answer is no way. Your infantry are useless for a super long time due to exp and such.

If you hit Dec after patch release, then there is a good chance you can pull it off.

Well, i applied the latest public beta about 2 days ago, which would be around 3rd week of Jan in Blizzard. But saying that, I though some of my ID's came out ok, not great around 5-6cv's(is this good or bad?), some more some less. Enough to shore up the line, and even in some places punch preliminary holes in the Sov lines for the Panzers.

One my gambles with my plan (due to playing random weather) is how long I have snow for. Mud would stop me, Blizzard now will crucify me!!!!

Your going to get popped with a blizzard turn or 2.........It is risky until April.

Check your infantry div. Look at the exp of your troopers. That is what kills you. You might get by with higher exp replacements.

Hard to tell since fortification levels are not on. The comments on how strong your infantry may or may not be are also important. I also don't know if your panzers have the reach going over a major river like that to get down south.

A safer (although smaller) option might be to break through the front just east of Krivoi Rog and head south with the target being east of Nikolaev. This would also lesson your issues with the weather perhaps unless you got unlucky.

I did look and do like your option Klydon, but with all the firepower I have in the area I feel I must take a gamble. I think i may even be able to bypass the city with my panzers, and leave the following infantry to take proper.

He who dares wins,,,,, or loses badly[:D]

When I surrounded AI at Ochakov they didn't seem to be isolated. I thought you could draw supplies from a port not connected to your rail network as long as supplying port is in supply - see Leningrad as an example where you have to take/isolate sivritsa (? spelling) to isolate L.

Also see Charon's AAR where we've been discussing Riga as a supply source and awaiting your ruling!

You won't have the legs on your tanks

There isn't any need to be that ambitious at this stage anyway

Klydon's plan makes perfect sense btw

ComradeP -> RE: Could I isolate this front? (2/13/2011 11:16:42 PM)

Oranienbaum isn't isolated either in the later years, I'm not sure what Pavel was trying to say.

Even if the Crimea is isolated, Ochakov's still in the Black Sea zone, so it's indirectly linked to ports with functional rail lines in the Caucasus.

ool -> RE: Could I isolate this front? (2/14/2011 3:48:15 PM)

Against a human opponent if you caught them napping they could still retreat through the Crimea. Sevastopol is source of supply for all those units. Also it is very easy for the Soviets to fall back through the Crimea across the Kerch strait to the Caucasus. Also naval evacuation through Sevastopol is a possibility however it is a very slow process.

Damm weather, Blizzard very next turn very much put a dampener on everything.

Shame really, Id created nice pocket with AGC ,, Down South I had pushed across river in force with Pz's still fairly well fueled up an reserve corps ready to take over.

Lesson learned , not really worth risk planning any Feb-March offensives as blizzard will leave you dead in your tracks ,literally[:(]
