In my 2nd game, I found the WD early on. I got a fight with the closest CPU player over it. While at war, I am repairing it. But it keeps blowing up. I will go to an earlier save trying to find out what happens. I have switched constructor ships, which delayed the explosion. So then I thought maybe it was sabotage.

Any thoughts?

I think you can have sabotage missions against any shipyard or construction ship, so you could maybe dodge them by swapping constructors.

I would wait for the resident oracle cdr. Data for a proper reply.

Well, I never experienced this but there was another thread on this at some point and the idea is that your repair can indeed be sabotaged. Those sabotage missions will stack and affect the World Destroyer not the constructor which also explains why swaping constructors will only delay the inevitable.

In the previous thread (don't remember which one but I think we can find it if you'd like) it was even worse as the WD would explode immediately after repairs were completed - and completing the repairs can take some time.

This is going to sound crazy but I'm not sure if eliminating the sabotaging empire (assuming you can determine who the buggers are) will scrap those missions and allow you to keep it. I think it can be tested with the editor.

And I'm an oracle only in that fumes get to my head [:D]

The thing takes so long to repair that your better off building a resupply ship or gas mine halfway there then send in a fleet. Blow the thing mid repair and as long as you don't target any constructors then you don't get a rep hit.

Indeed, it takes so long to repair I never repair it to use it. I repair it for the research bonus it gives me.

I've started to now ignore it totally to let the AI empires have both the ship and research so they get more of a fighting chance. We all know the Ai is lacking is some aspects but its nice when one turns up on your doorstep and starts sayin "wheres alderan"

No Larsenex. Neither will ship debris fields either.

Not sure if you can edit them in in sandbox, you can edit them out in non-sandbox mode
