Theng -> 1.03 b5 routed units can swim (2/18/2011 3:31:58 AM)

At the combat resolution on turn 2, three of my Soviet divisions (two infantry, one tank) who were cut off on turn 1 in Kurland got routed. In their fear, they ran all the way to Oeland across the Baltic Sea including their heavy equipment. I am not sure if that works as intended.

Its wad, see this picture

If they were in Courland, they may have had a supply line open through one of the two ports in the area. In that case, they are not really "cut-off" and may rout out of the pocket, which is WAD.

Yes, the minor harbors on both ends were still in my hands. I tried to manually evacuate the units but couldn't, but in all haste they could? Hmm

Yes, there's nothing blocking this kind of thing from happening.

carnifex -> RE: 1.03 b5 routed units can swim (2/18/2011 3:53:01 PM)

There should be IMHO. I can't put routed units on trains and ships manually, so they shouldn't be able to get on a troop ship by themselves. "Routed" implies a state of total disorganization - small bands of scared men running to the rear, that sort of thing.

I accidently forgot to ship the Soviet brigade from the port in Finland before ending the turn.

They routed back across the water. They didnt appear at a port on my turn though. They were 50 miles south of the coast.

If this is WAD and and all that can be offered up is that "Yes, there's nothing blocking this kind of thing from happening", I think it's time to shelve this game and wait a year or so for all the design flaws to be reevaluated. This is a joke. Schwerpunkt had a better Russo-German wargame than this and it's more than 5 years old.

Remember Dunkirk? Emergency evacuations should be allowed - my guess is the routed units suffered huge losses.

The Axis will benefit from this ability too when Sevastopol and the Baltic Coast cities change hands.

Schwerpunkt did indeed offer an excellent game called RGW (I still play it). I share your sentiments and I stopped playing against the WiTE AI long ago, waiting until some major changes come along (can't call them all 'fixes' since everything I am unhappy is about seems to be 'WAD', LOL).

HOWEVER, the WiTE PBEM experience is very good. Have you tried that? There are still many changes needed, but it is a very good PBEM game...

It's worth noting that the Soviets did historically extract substantial forces from Odessa by sea in 1941. Maybe they should be shown as 'retreated by sea' and not 'routed'.
