This is kind of fun.

Playing the Japanese, I put a squadron of Nells in Lae to harass my Allied opponent.

My opponent proceeded to pound Lae with bombers out of PM and Cooktown. Soon, half my squadron of Nells were damaged. Given the pounding and the lack of missions flown by this squadron, I moved the undamaged Nells out of Lae. In a few turns, the bombing let up a bit and the remaining Nells were able to repair.

I thought the smart move was to move the Nells while there was a small break in the bombing. When I went to move the remaining Nells from Lae to the base where the other half of the squadron was located I found that the Lae-based Nells had been upgraded to Bettys.

Now I have a squadron that is half Nells and half Bettys. A curious thing, to be sure, but kind of fun as well.

Anyone else seen this happen?

Had VF-42 upgrade to F4F-4s while a fragment remained as F4F-3s (Detached to shore in several places after the Yorktown was deep sixed). The fragement of VF-42 would never upgrade, "followed" the main squadron around like a camp follower, and only disappeared once the last F4F-3 was destroyed.

Hmm

Would it be better to disband the Nells or just let them play on? I guess what I'm really asking is will both squadron 'halves' regnerate as supposed to or will the Nell half wither and die over time?

As long as Nell replacement aircraft are available, and there are no other squadrons of Nells, I would guess they would probably last a while. Since there are no replacement F4F-3s, my fragment whithered and died over time.

As far as disbanding them, that was my problem. My fragment sqn was the only F4F-3 sqn left, and I couldn't disband them without a sqn with like a/c at the base.
