I'm looking for something that explains how attack and defense values work in terms of gameplay. I'm just not sure how I use them to plan an attack. The manual doesn't really talk about it. I know that there is more to it than spam a bunch of units to have to simply have the larger number.

See the Game manual section 19.  Appendicies.  It goes into detail about how the combat(s) are resolved etc.  Maybe a more specific question might receive a better answer.  Sorry.

A good collection of various guides, i.e. how the loss settings and different aspects of the game work can be found at - http://sites.google.com/site/toawredux/Home/toaw-articles, as well as 'Uncle' Larry's private collection of indispensible tips for the rookie AND experienced players, too -> http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=2231803&mpage=1

@Larry: I'd like to mirror your detailed guides or do you have a comprehensive link I can use in my blog?

No, don't worry, it's a very general question. Section 19 is sort of what I was looking for. It's just I would think something like that would be in the actual manual proper.

I don't even know what a comprehensive link is much less have one. But hey....be my guest, all those documents are in the public domain and you can do what you want with them. Enjoy.

Several times now you have refered to me as Uncle Larry and I've decided that I like that very much. Thanks.

See the "Clueless" post above. I sent Klink a copy by e-mail. Looks like I need to go back to the drawing board again. I was sure my questions were clarified somewhere...there is a LOT of material out there on TAOW. Thanks for the heads-up. I'll check these sources out, too. Gotta look more carefully before I leap (post). Thanks to Bob, Larry, Klink, and Telumar, and other immortals...you guys are sure patient with the feeble-minded! [&o][&o][&o]
