augustinus -> Night Time Arrivals at Bases (2/28/2011 1:47:06 AM)

As the Japanese in the Guadalcanal Scenario, I want to deliver supplies to my troops at Tassafaronga at night from either Rabaul or Shortlands. What is the best speed to accomplish this task?

oldman45 -> RE: Night Time Arrivals at Bases (2/28/2011 2:38:11 AM)

Create a Fast Transport TF, I believe they deliver at night.

bradfordkay -> RE: Night Time Arrivals at Bases (2/28/2011 6:12:18 AM)

And set the Fast Transport TF to "Mission Speed". This will cause it to travel to a point that is one day away (at full speed). It will head in at full speed at night, unload, and head out at full speed the next morning - before the daytime air phase.

If you set the TF speed to "Full Speed" there is a chance that it will arrive in daylight hours, which is what you don't want.

In theory fast tranports, yes. However, fast transports just don't work... [&:]

Y do you say that Puhis?

anarchyintheuk -> RE: Night Time Arrivals at Bases (2/28/2011 3:12:23 PM)

There have been far too many instances where the ft is still at the destination base for morning air strikes.

Puhis -> RE: Night Time Arrivals at Bases (2/28/2011 3:41:30 PM)

Yes, or the TF is still one hex from the target!!! TF movement code is not very reliable, not at all.

Japan don't have enough DDs or APDs to use them as fast transports, when every mission have a high risk of losing ships...

bradfordkay -> RE: Night Time Arrivals at Bases (2/28/2011 4:34:10 PM)

Are y'all setting them to Mission Speed or Full Speed?

In my experience that is the difference (and how the game was designed).

Burl -> RE: Night Time Arrivals at Bases (2/28/2011 4:39:18 PM)

I set mine to mission speed, and sometimes they end up in broad daylight one hex from the port. So it is some kind of bug.

inqistor -> RE: Night Time Arrivals at Bases (2/28/2011 5:39:22 PM)

Just make sure, your ships are fast enough to get to base in one phase.
Easiest way, will be to send few BBs, and close Lunga airfield, so you will be safe during daylight.

Puhis -> RE: Night Time Arrivals at Bases (2/28/2011 5:41:18 PM)

I don't use full speed at all, just mission speed.

There's absolutely no reason why fast transpots end up one hex from the target. No other reason than a bug.

Well, it could be weird implementation of "threat tolerance". AI considers base too dangerous to proceed, and changes course (and ends in even worse position).

Yakface -> RE: Night Time Arrivals at Bases (2/28/2011 5:49:28 PM)

There's a topic in the tech room covering this:

http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=2699620

Basically my reading of the main problem (number of other problems were also mentioned) is that if you try to let the computer manage your fast transports by using mission speed, it will leave them with insufficient OP points to deliver their load and get away.

You need to move the Fast TF closer than 1 full speed move (only say 5 or 6 hexes if the TF is capable of 9 at full speed) and then launch them. Under the 'mission speed routine' the computer will move them to the max distance they can make in one night phase and then make the dash. That used to work fine in the old WITP, but now it results in the ships not moving away.

Puhis -> RE: Night Time Arrivals at Bases (2/28/2011 5:56:37 PM)

Thanks Yakface, I have to try that one.

Of course it won't work if your fast transports are set to pick up troops... [:(]

The ones ending up one hex short... are they set to 'retirement allowed'?

augustinus -> RE: Night Time Arrivals at Bases (3/1/2011 3:46:18 AM)

To one and all: thanks for your input. Now, somewhere in the cobwebs of my ancient memory it seems there was a tutorial with the original WITP and it showed that by using cruise speed, one could arrive at night time from wherever. Does anyone else remember that, and if so, would it apply to AE? I ask this, because using full or mission speed (not APD FTs) doesn't do it apropos Tassafaronga. Of course, I could be way off the mark on this, probably, due to the rum and coca-colas the steward keeps serving me on the fantail.

I've been playing this game series since UV, so I don't do rookie mistakes anymore. At least not very often... [:)]

I think it's pretty obvious that fast transports don't work as they should. One day FTs run OK, next day they end up one hex short and byebye ships...
