Waylander -> AI Level ?? (9/18/2002 1:33:59 PM)

Whatt effect does the AI level button in preferences have??.
Is a value of XXX (default) high or low??. What is the difference between default and 100 or 200 ??.
I am trying to beef up my AI a little and already have AI advantage turned on.

regards
Waylander

Well, it depends on how experienced one is, and what you are playing.

Generally, I no longer play generated battles so I only use them for testing purposes.

For prepared scenarios, if the battle is too difficult, try something like this:

Set your own preferences a bit higher. The ones I use for this are Hitting (120 or so), Infantry Toughness (120), Tank Toughness (120). That usually makes a significant difference.

If the scenario is too easy, Do the reverse and crank up the AI a bit. Normally, a prepared scenario will not be too easy.

In generated battles, I almost always set the AI preferences higher so it can play tougher.

Another approach is to turn the default troop quality off and set those to a number you like. For example, if I am playing against the Soviet in 1941, I will normally set German to something like 75 and Soviet to something like 70.

Almost any scenario will play more to your level if you make those sorts of adjustments. These can be set at any time during scenario play versus the AI.

PBEM/On-line requires that these judgements be made before the battle starts since they cannot be altered after play has started. This is the topic of lots of negotiation. :D

Anyway, it is a shame when a scenario is "dumped" because it is too difficult or too easy when the settings are so easily altered.

Give it a try. But, remember to reset your settings after playing because they "stick" in the infamous .prf file and have to be restored to your likes. If you cannot remember the defaults, merely delete the Steel.prf file located in the \SAVE folder. Then when you load up SPWAW, you have the original settings.

So it is easy and safe to experiment with preference settings.

Waylander -> AI LEVEL - thanks but what does it do?? (9/19/2002 6:28:12 AM)

Thanks redleg, I do play around with the toughness preferences, I guess you could say I am a fairly advanced player having played all the SP games from SP1, including SPWW2.
I guess what I am trying to say is, I dont really know what effect the AI LEVEL button has on the game. I have always left it at default and just changed the toughness buttons. The manual doesnt seem to explain it very much.

regards

All I can do is guess - but I would guess it alters the hit routines, etc but not the manner that the AI plays. Of course, if the AI has decent troops as a result of the adjustment, it will be more likely to have success since its troops are more reliable and able to function. As I say, a guess.
