Cavgunner -> RE: Birth of the Terran Republic (3/20/2011 5:46:57 PM)

2766.05.26

We have encountered the Teekan race.  The Teekans operate their government in the fashion of one large corporation in which every Teekan has a stake.  Although the Teekans seem harmless and somewhat comical, they have already colonized 18 worlds.

The Naxxilian Federation has settled one of the Ice planets of the Khandrela system, just a short jump away from Earth.  As we already have a desert colony there, we do not wish to share a territory so close to Earth, not even with a trusted trading partner. The historic Khandrela Agreement cedes ownership of Irpeuker to us in exchange for a cash settlement.  We also obtain Proximity Sensors technology, which is swiftly added to the designs of all of our ships.  The Naxxillians of Irpeukker become citizens of the Republic.

A Dhayut warship has destroyed one of our merchant ships in the Ryluth system.  The attack took place without warning even though our vessel, the Graceful Dawn, was following all proper protocols.  Our citizens are outraged by this callous act of aggression.  The destruction of the Graceful Dawn becomes the turning point at which the Republic begins to realize that peaceful coexistence with the Dhayuts may not be possible.

Typical Dhayut aggression, will they ever change?

Nice work with the Khandrela Agreement. Good bit of business that.

Our ambassador on Ita lodges a formal complaint, however it soon becomes clear that the Supremacy is not interested in taking serious action.

Meanwhile, one of our scout vessels in the distant Abraxas system, beyond the southern extent of the Ita Supremacy, has stumbled upon an entire fleet of pirate raiders.  We can only assume that some of the other empires have been funding these pirates to attack outlying Dhayut worlds.  The Intrepid Star jumps away just in time...

In the distant, uninhabited Ramazin system we have recovered an abandoned capital ship.  Analysis of the ship's computer core reveals that the vessel has been silently orbiting Ramazin 6 for thousands of years.  Amazingly, it seems that this was one of the flagships of the ancient human armada.  At the very least, it cannot be denied that this mighty warship is clearly designed for a human crew.  We also learn the ship's name: Raging Retribution.  Although its weapons are not quite as advanced as those found on the Proud Aggressor, our new battleship more than makes up for this in sheer quantity of firepower.  As tensions rise between the Republic and the Ita Supremacy, the Raging Retribution is swiftly commissioned into the Fleet.

2768.09.25

Four more freighters have been attacked.  Some of our trading partners have dropped all pretense of diplomacy and are requesting that we declare war on the Supremacy.  The Supremacy seems intent on striking out at any neighbor for any reason, or even no reason.  Our strategists predict that it is only a matter of time before they turn to us and start picking off our outlying colonies.

As a precautionary measure The Fleet assembles at the recently-colonized world of Eulus 1, near the Republic's border with the Supremacy.  We are able to cobble together 8 Lola-class destroyers, the xenotech destroyer Proud Aggressor, the battleship Raging Retribution, and two fully-loaded Robinson-class troop transports.  This fleet will defend the space port under construction at Eulus 1, as well as respond to any other incursions upon our frontier.

[image]http://i887.photobucket.com/albums/ac76/Cavgunner/27680925thefleetassembles.jpg[/image]

2769.04.06

Our friends in the Free Aitun Paradise have declined our proposal for a Mutual Defense Pact.  Perhaps this is because they wish to keep us out of their war with the Supremacy.  In any event, the Republic has recently initiated a crash shipbuilding program for dozens of new corvettes, frigates, and destroyers, as well six Bastion-class orbital defense bases.  If the Shandars will not enter into a defense pact willingly then we do not have the funds available to convince them otherwise.

2769.04.21

In one bright spot of news, we have entered into a Free Trade Agreement with the Xenox of the distant Di Girrelleun Technocracy.  We are not really expecting to see major returns in trade with them, but their territories will provide a safe place for our far-flung exploration ships to refuel.

Cavgunner -> RE: Birth of the Terran Republic (3/21/2011 2:37:51 AM)

2769: THE ZENTABIA WAR

The Ita Supremacy feared Terran Republic expansion so close to its own borders, and they were rightly concerned that the once-inconsequential humans were on the verge of forging a major empire right on their doorstep.  Internally, the war with the Republic also served as a means to distract the Dhayut public from the massive losses that were occurring at the hands of the Ancient Guardians.  The ill-conceived war with the Guardians was going so poorly that the fleet strength of the Supremacy had been nearly halved in less than a year.  Surely a war with the humans, with their small and somewhat primitive fleet, would result in a profitable subjugation agreement and prove that the Supremacy was still a force to be reckoned with.

As history would show, however, the humans were not content to let the Supremacy marshal its forces.  Instead they surprised almost everyone by immediately going on the offensive.  This vicious first strike was aimed at one of the Supremacy's most important worlds:  Zentabia.

-Excerpt from The Zentabia War, author Haiyan Huai, Earth, 2790.

2769.06.08

The Terran Republic is a peaceful nation.  We do not want this war.  Yet the Dhayuts still have the indecency to claim that we provoked them.  Our xeno-biologists say that in many ways the Dhayuts cannot help but view us as prey animals.  If that is so then they are about to find out that this prey bites back.

[image]http://i887.photobucket.com/albums/ac76/Cavgunner/27690608thezentabiawar.jpg[/image]

If we are to have any hope of victory against the Supremacy then we must negate the factors that currently give them an advantage.  A Dhayut destroyer is pound-for-pound nearly twice as effective as our own Lola class.  It will be some time before we can deploy the sheer quantity of warships needed to fight them on even terms.  However the Supremacy has declared war before they were ready.

The moon of Zentabia lies in the Adiga system, just a short jump away from our fleet at Eulus 1.  At Zentabia, a captive population of Shandar are set to gathering the fluid of the extremely rare Zentabia flower.  This fluid is known to have amazing regenerative qualities, and a mere droplet is worth a prince's ransom.  By freeing the colony and claiming this resource for the Republic we will greatly degrade the Supremacy's economic development.  The 1st Fleet consists of the Proud Aggressor, 8 Lola-class destroyers, and it is accompanied by the 3rd Fleet consisting of two Robinson-class troop transports.  The combined task force makes the jump to Zentabia.  The Raging Retribution will stay behind at Eulus 1 to defend the planet while the last few components of the space port are completed.

The die is cast.

[image]http://i887.photobucket.com/albums/ac76/Cavgunner/27690605thezentabiawar.jpg[/image]

2769.07.26

The Proud Aggressor arrives just ahead of the other ships of the Fleet.  Amazingly, the system seems virtually undefended.  Our sensors quickly tell us why: an Ancient Guardian cruiser is atomizing any Dhayut vessel it can find.  It appears that our troops will be able to land on the moon unopposed.

The rest of the Fleet arrives.  The two troopships of 3rd Fleet arrive shortly afterward.

The Ancient Guardian cruiser ignores all hails and shortly leaves the system.

The Dhayut are fierce warriors, but their 3 battalions at Zentabia cannot stand against 14 Striker battalions.  After a ground battle lasting less than a month Zentabia is ours.

[IMG]http://i887.photobucket.com/albums/ac76/Cavgunner/27690902zentabiainvaded.jpg[/IMG]

2769.10.14

An overview of the local situation.  Zentabia is firmly within our control.  With the spaceport at Eulus 1 complete, the 2nd Fleet (consisting solely of the Raging Retribution and a Robinson class troopship) assaults the moon of UT883 in the Kurrubah system.  The Dhayut ground troops are outnumbered 10 to 1.  The moon falls into our possession after only a few days.

It is risky splitting our forces into small components like this, but we must reduce the Supremacy's ability to resupply their ships in the field.

"The humans must have known that they had no chance. Their ships seemed like toys compared to the Spiders. And yet at the moment they should have fled, I watched as the humans turned on their pursuers. In those dreadful, bloody minutes, I was reminded of something my father had said to me once. He said, "My son, agility and finesse count for much. But in both life and Todash, if all you have is a rock, then sometimes the simplest thing is to just grab your enemy and bash his head in with it."

-Huaratl of Naxxil, captain of the freighter Bold Starwind, giving his first-hand account of the Battle of Zentabia.

2769.11.20

Five Supremacy warships have jumped into the Adiga system. 1st Fleet can deal with this as long as the enemy fleet is eliminated quickly...

[image]http://i887.photobucket.com/albums/ac76/Cavgunner/27691120dhayutfleetarrivesatZentabia.jpg[/image]

2769.12.05

Five more Dhayut vessels have just jumped in. The empty transport ships of 3rd Fleet are ordered to flee while 1st Fleet turns to engage. We must prevent the Supremacy's troopships from approaching the planet.

Even at close range, where our Maxos laser blasters do the most damage, the Dhayut destroyers are clearly superior to our vessels. The problem is catching them. The Supremacy's ships are faster, tougher, and their Shatterforce lasers, although less effective close in, can easily outrange our guns. With these advantages, even their frigates and escorts become dangerous threats. The one wild card in this fight is the Proud Aggressor (near top of screen), which is dancing circles around every other ship in the battle.

Fortunately, our Lola class of destroyers was recently refitted with first-generation Hyperdeny fields. Any Supremacy vessel that does manage to get cornered won't get away.

2769.12.21

We have managed to destroy two troopships, but 1st Fleet has become scattered and our ships are taking very heavy damage (photo). The fleet is ordered to come about and engage the enemy warships at point-blank range. A brutal short-range knife fight ensues.

Shortly after the image shown below, the Supremacy task force is reduced to just 6 vessels. However, all 8 Lola destroyers of 1st Fleet have been lost. Only the Proud Aggressor is still fighting...

[image]http://i887.photobucket.com/albums/ac76/Cavgunner/27691221becomingoverwhelmed.jpg[/image]

(I should have taken another screenshot showing the Proud Aggressor by itself but in all the excitement I was rather distracted!)

You're a good storyteller, Cavgunner. I especially enjoyed the "quote" by Huaratl of Naxxil!

Cavgunner -> RE: Birth of the Terran Republic (3/26/2011 8:38:09 PM)

The Proud Aggressor dodged lithely through the burning fragments of human and Dhayut vessels. Suddenly, it shuddered as another volley of Shatterforce laser fire hammered its shields. The destroyer responded in kind, its Titan beams slicing through the hull of the closest Supremacy frigate like a surgeon's laser. One of the beams found the frigate's fuel bunker and the ship detonated in a brilliant fireball.

"Sir, target destroyed. Our shields are at 20%!"

There were still 6 Supremacy ships left. This included the second troopship that had just jumped into the system. The Striker battalions on Zentabia could hold off the ground assault contingent of one Supremacy troopship... but certainly not two.

Captain Sterling's clarion voice cut through the controlled chaos on the bridge. "Give me Fleet status!"

"The New Delhi and the Tianjin are no longer responding to comms. Sensors report all other vessels are either adrift or broken apart. We're the only ones left, sir."

Captain Sterling grimaced. The Fleet had destroyed 6 Dhayut ships- 7, just now- and had lost 8 in return. A bloody price to pay, and it wasn't going to be enough. The Proud Aggressor had been salvaged from an ancient battlefield several years ago. Having once belonged to some unknown alien civilization, it was fantastically advanced. Although it was barely larger than a standard frigate, it had the firepower and shielding of a cruiser, and was nearly as fast and maneuverable as a Blackwasp starfighter. However, not even the Proud Aggressor could take on 6 Dhayut warships by itself.

Sterling knew that his next command would doom both the ship and its crew, but if they didn't stop at least one of the two remaining troopships, then the Spiders would retake Zentabia. All this sacrifice would be for nothing. Even now the two transports were turning toward the planet.

"Helm, set a direct intercept course for that troop carrier to starboard."

"Sir! The remaining enemy warships have formed a line between us and the target. We would pass directly in front of their guns!"

"Thank you, Lieutenant. Put me on internal vox."

A chime not unlike an old-fashioned naval whistle sounded throughout the ship. "This is the Captain speaking. We have destroyed several enemy vessels, but the rest of the Fleet has been taken out of action. We are going to attempt to intercept one of the enemy's planetary assault ships. The remaining enemy warships are blocking our path to the target, so the odds are heavily against us. You have all fought with honor and courage befitting Humanity's greatest naval traditions. If you wish to make your way to an escape pod, I authorize you to do so now. We are beginning our attack run in twenty seconds. That is all."

As Sterling cut the link to the vox, the Sensors officer was frantically tracking a new contact. "Sir, there is another ship coming in!"

"Nothing we can do about that now. It has been an honor serving with all of you. Initiate intercept course!"

"Sir! Contact's IFF is Terran Republic! It's the Retribution!!!"

2770.04.04

With the arrival of the Raging Retribution, the remaining ships of the Supremacy fleet are quickly destroyed.  Also arrived is the Deadly Surprise, a twin to the Proud Aggressor.  It is the second xenotech vessel to be salvaged from the Lumabo debris field near the Desolation Moon.

[image]http://i887.photobucket.com/albums/ac76/Cavgunner/27700404battlewindsdown.jpg[/image]

2770.08.10

Months later the Supremacy is still harrassing our efforts at Zentabia.  Although we hold the moon, civilian trade and military construction in the system is completely disrupted by these ongoing skirmishes.  Fortunately, a pair of Eagle-class frigates have arrived to help bolster our defenses.  They are sorely needed.

[image]http://i887.photobucket.com/albums/ac76/Cavgunner/27700810battlestillongoing.jpg[/image]

2770.08.21

The Raging Retribution is capable of projecting a vast HyperDeny field.  These Dhayut destroyers will not survive the experience.

[image]http://i887.photobucket.com/albums/ac76/Cavgunner/27700821ongoingbattleactual.jpg[/image]

2770.10.14

The prize of the Lumabo debris field, the xenotech cruiser Bitter Rendevous, has arrived at Zentabia.  Although it is barely half the size of the battleship Raging Retribution it carries nearly as much firepower.  Also seen are two brand-new Avalon-class light cruisers, equipped with first-generation Shatterforce lasers.

As reinforcements continue to arrive from throughout the Republic Zentabia seems secure at last.

Cavgunner -> RE: Birth of the Terran Republic (4/3/2011 7:18:24 PM)

2771.01.23

Despite our victory, it seems that the Supremacy still has forces to spare in this conflict.  With the bulk of our offensive capability tied up at Zentabia the Supremacy takes the opportunity to raid and/or conquer some of our outlying colonies.

Our outpost at Kharun 3 in the Kharun system is the first to fall.  Civilian ships fleeing the system reported that a Destroyer unloaded a single Dhayut battalion.  This was more than enough to overwhelm the Striker battalion stationed there.  Note: While Kharun 3 had been settled by humans, a vast quantity of refugees from other empires had made the planet home, particularly outcasts from the Ita Supremacy.  By 2771, more than half the population consisted of Dhayuts.  We later learned that the Supremacy's occupation was particularly unpleasant for these wayward brethren.

Also lost is Ubas 1, a desert colony that had been founded a few years earlier (south-southwest of Kharun on the map below).

While the loss of these worlds does no major damage to us economically, they are very important strategically.  With these worlds as refueling points the Supremacy can easily strike the rest of our so-called "New Colony Zone" (the triangle of Republic worlds shown near the bottom of the map), including Zentabia.

[image]http://i887.photobucket.com/albums/ac76/Cavgunner/27710123kharun3attacked.jpg[/image]

2771.02.12

More grave news as we receive reports that Eulus 1 is under attack by a large Supremacy fleet.  With our troop transport assets still gathering new battalions from our core worlds we will not be able to reinforce the planet.  After so much hard work, the new space port at Eulus 1 is destroyed.  The planet falls soon after.

[image]http://i887.photobucket.com/albums/ac76/Cavgunner/27710212eulusunderattack.jpg[/image]

2771.03.15

Below is an overview of the local situation just before Eulus 1 falls to the Supremacy.  Note the relative sizes of the Republic 1st Fleet and the Supremacy 11th Fleet, as well as the numerous Republic warships enroute to the region.

[image]http://i887.photobucket.com/albums/ac76/Cavgunner/27710315dhayut11thfleet.jpg[/image]

2771.06.24

Meanwhile two Dhayut destroyers are harrassing our defenses in the Ikoriun system, the westernmost system of the New Colony Zone.  At first this battle seems to be well in hand...

[image]http://i887.photobucket.com/albums/ac76/Cavgunner/27710624battlewellinhand.jpg[/image]

2771.07.06

In hand, that is, until yet another Supremacy fleet arrives.  This new Dhayut fleet systematically destroys every spaceport and mining station in the system.  Every Republic ship that can flee does so.  Fortunately, the twin Continental worlds of Ikoriun 3 and 4 are not invaded.  Between their losses in space and on the ground the Dhayuts have lost at least 40 army battalions in the last two years, so perhaps those losses are finally being felt.

In any event, the Supremacy fleet departs Ikoriun once they have nothing left to shoot at.

martok -> RE: Birth of the Terran Republic (4/3/2011 7:58:00 PM)

Uff-da, looks like things are getting pretty rough out there!

So is the situation worrying yet, or are you more annoyed than concerned at this point?

Cavgunner -> RE: Birth of the Terran Republic (4/4/2011 4:24:29 AM)

I would say I was fairly worried at this point.  I really only had 2 worlds capable of generating ground army battalions in any reasonable length of time:  Earth, and to a lesser extent, Avalon.  My other worlds were still relatively "new" and produced new troops quite slowly.  This meant that my painstakingly-built ground armies at Zentabia and UT883 were stuck there for the moment while my troopships scurried around my core worlds grabbing every free battalion they could find.

In short, until more ground troops arrived there was little I could do to retake the worlds I had lost. Nor could I go on the offense with 1st Fleet until more ships showed up to defend Zentabia.

Furthermore, while I had been able to beat off the Dhayut incursions at Zentabia so far, if they had hit me with more ships sooner, they still could have wiped out the 1st Fleet. As the war continued the Dhayuts did hit me with one or two of their cruisers occasionally (one of them can be seen at the bottom left of the screenshot for 2771.02.12, during the attack on Eulus 1). These ships were very tough opponents, but fortunately they were relatively uncommon.

Cavgunner -> RE: Birth of the Terran Republic (4/6/2011 1:54:47 AM)

Despite the ongoing war there were also numerous examples of expansion and discovery.

2771.01.21

With the advent of Ocean colonization technology we are able to colonize numerous worlds that were previously deemed inhospitable.  The most important of these is, of course, Jupiter's crown jewel: Europa.

[image]http://i887.photobucket.com/albums/ac76/Cavgunner/27710121europacolonized.jpg[/image]

2771.10.07

Work on the Desolation Moon at Lumabo continues.  Frankly, we are unsure how long it will take to fully complete it.  An offhand comment by a Fleet admiral who joked that the vessel would be "done when it's done" enrages civilians and the media.

[image]http://i887.photobucket.com/albums/ac76/Cavgunner/27711007desolationmoonprogress.jpg[/image]

2771.11.02

Our exploration ships continue to scour every corner of the galaxy.  The discovery of a fully intact Imperial Archive on distant Andrumida 9 is, by far, the most important find since humanity unlocked the hyperdrive.

[image]http://i887.photobucket.com/albums/ac76/Cavgunner/27711102imperialarchives.jpg[/image]

The Ancients accomplished many incredible things.  Yet their greatest gift of all was not a weapon, nor a ship, nor some undreamt-of technology.  It was their system of government, a superior, nearly-ideal form of participative representation that they had refined over thousands of years.  Yet it was not just a system of government; it was a complete philosophy, it was a way of life, it was respect for life.

On distant Ita the Dhayut overlords hiss and scream at the news of this discovery, for they know that the Supremacy's time has already passed.  As the Way of the Ancients spreads peacefully throughout our worlds a new era begins.

So dawns the Age of the Terran Republic.

Thanks for all the comments.  The updates I'm giving now are actually "in the past" as the actual game on my hard drive is considerably further down the road.

2771.12.06

Back in core space near Sol, the Naxxilians have settled another Ice planet in the Neroan system, which we have already claimed.  Since our existing colony there was founded some time ago, we can only assume that it took this long for their colony ship to arrive.

(Note: The game really, really needs a way to claim systems within your of sphere of influence, even if you don't have a colony there.)

Even though their behavior seems suspiciously close to claim-jumping we wish to maintain a good relationship with the Naxxilians.  The Neroan Agreement gives us control of the Ice World called Maso in exchange for Efficient Blasters and a cash settlement.  We also acquire several other technologies that we have been lacking up to this point.

Our scouts have discovered a secret site called the Pozdac Weapons Testing Range.

Meanwhile, 1st Fleet at Zentabia continues to reinforce.  It now has 18 ships, including ten Avalon-class light cruisers.  Additional ships are arriving every week.

Deep within the Pozdac range we have discovered an abandoned capital ship, the Devastator.  Analysis of the Devastator's computer core reveals more galactic history.

The Devastator itself becomes our 2nd capital ship. It is a hybrid battleship/carrier that appears to be well suited for independent operations. A skeleton crew is assigned to the ship to bring it back to Republic space, however it will be months before it arrives.
