E -> Spam-bots? Don't Answer... REPORT! (3/22/2011 7:50:41 AM)

It never ceases to amaze me how many people profess to be against spam-bots, but actually help their cause by bumping their posts back to the top of the forum. If you're really against spam, you might want to try being a part of the solution.

If you notice, there is a link at the bottom right of every post that allows you to "report" the message. One thing I've heard complaints about the reporting system is what the "reason" should be... I always use the same one (the first successful one I stumbled upon). Report it as "ADVERTISING," then in the space provided, just note it's a "spam-bot." It has worked every time for me (since I stumbled upon an acceptable "reason"). It occasionally takes up to a day and half, but it does work.

I cannot confirm or deny that Matrix is going to award a store discount coupon to the person who reports the most actual spam-bots by December 20'th of this year (with erroneous reports deducting from their total). That kind of announcement will have to come directly from Matrix in the future.

And if they invade our legit threads like what some are doing?

Cool thanks, I hope that works because these spammers are bugging the hell out of me [:@] ( the angry face isn't saying nearly enough how I hate that vermin)

/edit.
It should be made easier for regular members to report messages, it should be possible to report the spammer not just the message. Report spam, ban spammer, delete posts, done.

I don't have a good answer for you on that, as I just did report #4 on spam-bot "gavinspike" (happily someone else did #3!), and I am a bit disappointed as I know I did reports #1 & #2, which were deleted. And yet the account was able to do #3 & 4 posts.

@Josh

There is a green button beside "buddy" to hide messages from a certain user.

...which is best used for obnoxious regular posters, as all spam-bots eventually disappear (1-4 posts on average?). But the green button won't block the continuous stream of new spam-bots.

Which is why I find it more entertaining than anything else.

You put forth a viable alternative! "Rude Ignore" does work much better than responding to the spam-bots and bouncing their posts back to the top of the forum!

Anthropoid -> RE: Spam-bots? Don't Answer... REPORT! (3/22/2011 3:10:17 PM)

Meh. Not replying involves fewer key strokes = less "entertainment"

wodin -> RE: Spam-bots? Don't Answer... REPORT! (3/25/2011 3:25:02 PM)

every time I report it's already been done...

Yes, sadly many do like to help the spam-bots. Although some are just plain fooled by them.

Logon earlier! *grin* Actually... until this thread was started, I've never run into a spam-bot post that had been previously reported. And I think that was because finding a "reason" for the report was next to impossible to get past the system, thereby frustrating any and all who tried to report the spam (but using "Advertising" works).

Seem to hear this alot but actually quite easy. For reason other just put "Post is spam" in narrative I usually put something like "Looks like Spam"

As far as adding to the thread, I think most do it for the fun of it. Little harm really. Bumping back to the top, well ok, but most uf us would never hit the link anyway. Some of the spam threads get quite entertaining.

Spam is preferable to your tiresome pontificating. [>:]

I have to agree with Yogi... some of the threads get hilarious and a Spambot doesn't care if we add to the thread or not... it's just a dumb bot following it's program.

And really... is anyone here dumb enough to click on an obvious spam link? I think not.

A bit ironic that you yourself were tricked into responding to a spam-bot on the same day as your post. *grin*
