Actually, maybe just additional motivation to get revenge after seeing their flat-tops hit.....too bad electrons don't have feelings....

GreyJoy -> RE: Angels over Sadogashima (2/3/2012 4:13:02 PM)

oh com'on guys! Have some faith!!!!

Do you remember what happened to my CVEs in port at Uruppu Jiima?...well, i hope in something like that! Could it be that only my CAP is always out of position and ineffective?!?!!?

Are you using Torpedo squadrons from your destroyed carriers?  Or were these shore-based/existing carrier squadrons?

Mike

A mix of them

Why? Does it change something?

No, I don't think so, although in WitP, fragments would sometimes act strangely. Sounds like you were planning to recombine those were possible though.

I was more curious what the consequences would be to the existing CV fleet would be if the torpedo squadrons took terrible losses.

Good luck with the attack. Hopefully, I'll be spending my afternoon at work reading about a stunning victory.

Mike

P.S. I'm about 2/3 of the way through A Dance with Dragons, and Theon is starting to actually becoming somewhat likable again, even missing a few parts. I'd still go with Victarion, though, if I had to be one of the Greyjoys. Waiting for him to show up at Meereen like everyone else seems to be doing.

GreyJoy -> RE: Angels over Sadogashima (2/3/2012 4:39:25 PM)

Well, we have to wait few hours i guess...

I wouldn't be surprised if this would be another stunning success. I wouldn't be surprised if it turns into utter debacle either. Either way, it's going to be interesting. [:)]

Canoerebel -> RE: Angels over Sadogashima (2/3/2012 4:52:09 PM)

In the game thus far rader has lost 2x aircraft - something like 38,000 for rader and 19,000 for GJ.  Question:  What if those numbers were flipped?  Second question:  Do the Allies even have that many aircraft?

mmmm....Rader has lost so far 42,000 aircrafts, while we have 19,600...
Don't know, but i tell you that my pools are always empty and if i lose more than 200 fighters in one day i have to wait 20 days to replace those losses...

So i would never be able to sustain Rader's losses

cwDeici -> RE: Angels over Sadogashima (2/3/2012 9:17:00 PM)

Yeah, I was almost certain GJ would go ahead and do it anyway, he's consistently gone for the biggest dice around the block. Here's to luck!

I have had this problem .. but moving one/two hex(es) at a time when it is important helps give the program some direction. So when specific waypoints are required I move to the waypoint .. WitPTracker tells me destination is reached .. then I set the next waypoint ... just a thought ..

There were no waypoints...just moving from the northern Hex to one hex south east...instead they moved east...[&:]

Hi GJ - after CanoeRebel mentioned your AAR many times in his I started reading it from the beginning - great stuff and good work! I love how you have put your own stamp on what you have learned and what you are comfortable doing while taking setbacks in stride. Your confidence is sometimes shaken but never broken! Also love the secrecy in which you prepare your next moves so no one will 'let the cat out of the bag' accidentally or otherwise.

Anyway, I have not seen anyone answer your puzzle about the tank unit going off on a tangent. I have had this happen many times with all types of marching units. If you set them to march to a point several hexes away the AI seems to try to calculate what will get them there fastest taking into account terrain, roads and hex-side control. For your tanks, using the first class roads across the river would have been irresistable and likely faster than the overland route. On the other hand while marching land units from Chittagong to Prome, I have had some leave the road system early and slog through the jungle to march down the clear hexes north of Prome. The roads would have been faster!

In my view this is a weak point of the game - we should be able to set waypoints to specify the route we want the unit to march on. As it is, I often have to march them one hex at a time to avoid misadventures.

Edit: PS - Railroad lines are not "roads" for marching land units, although they do seem to be able to use RR bridges to cross rivers more quickly.

so tomorrow, if everything goes well and Murphy doesn't come in, 350 Torpedo Bombers, escorted by 200 fighters will attack the Kido Butai while at anchor at Kobe.
The CAP is supposed to be at 20k in order to defend against our strategic bombing (that's why i started them back again), while our bombers will approach at 1000 feet.
I'm not looking to sink all his CVs, obviously, but to damage a lot of them, forcing them in port for some months.
Sadogashima is the starting base. 7 hexes of distance.
at least 600 enemy fighters are expected to be on CAP.
We are VERY overstacked there so it is very possible that we will suffer some penalty in coordination.
It's a risky mission...but the prize is so important and the value of the assets invested so low that we can efford a fiasco.

Finger crossed.

Are the TB's on port attack? would the attack with torpedoes if they are in port? What time does Rader get home from work?

GreyJoy -> RE: Angels over Sadogashima (2/3/2012 11:17:27 PM)

Sorry guys. Rader is working late tonight[:(].... We will have to wait till tomorrow...

John...they are docked...not disbanded.... Torpedo attack ordered....the same that happened to me at Uruppu Jiima....

That screenshot is from a year ago. He abandoned India and retreated back to Burma shortly before the Hokkaido landing.

GreyJoy -> RE: LOST VICTORIES (2/4/2012 10:13:53 AM)

Rader once again read my mind before i even started to think.
After having left his CVs there for 6 turns he decided to move them away right today...well...probably having seen Sadogashima reaching level 3 AF he decided Kobe was not anymore a safe place where to anchor...
Anyway the result was that i lost 200 planes attacking useless shippings near Tokyo...(We sunk an AMC, an AV and a "E" class...)
Well...was worth the risk imho...and fiascos happen in war all the time.

The good news was that our DBs at Hakkodate didn't eat Rader's poisoned bait... he sent 3 ASW TFs near Hachinoe...with a HUGE LRCAP over them...i lost some 5 Helldivers that were on naval search but nothing else....

the other good strategic news is that Sadogashima reached another AF level (now 4). the 550 Engineers are doing wonders there...
Now at Sadogashima i have 1200 AVs, CD guns, 500 mines, 4 AA units (each with 16 90mm guns and 32 40mm Bofors guns), an air HQ and 85,000 supplies.
I say that in few more turns we'll be able to max it out, reaching AF lvl 7...allowing me to base 350 single engine fighters...

Now i have to decide what to do. I have a reserve of 3500 AVs plus 700 more to reinforce Hachinoe...

At the same time i need to keep on strat bombing...i need to destroy the KI.-201 factories before 1.01.1945....damned R&D![:@]

As you can see rader stopped his attacks against Sadogashima...eventually the losses were becoming too high even for Rader's muscled economy[:D]

What about a massive landing here?

i can mass nearly 5000 AVs (using also the Sadogashima garrison)...preparation would not been perfect but i can support it with a massive naval and air bombing....

GreyJoy -> RE: LOST VICTORIES (2/4/2012 12:31:58 PM)

In the meanwhile i was able to assemble my CV/CVE TF... we have 6 operative CVs and 23 CVEs, operating in 3 different TFs behind the Paramushiro Jiima line...so screened by a LBA force of 250 DBs and 130 fighters.
The same striking LBA force is doubled at Attu and Shemewahetever island (in the Aleutinas), while 25 subs are screening the waters in front of these two points where my convoys have to pass through in order to move from the Aleutinas to the Kuriles.

Since the debacle of operation Dust n Bones we managed to move to Hokkaido 2,000,000 more supplies and 600,000 fuel...

Can you afford a fourth stymied beachhead on Honshu? If not, don't do it (unless you're having one of those Clint Eastwood "Go ahead, make my day" moments and just have to).

Why wouldn't rader be expecting a landing right under the nose of Sadagoshima? Why wouldn't he be able to rail in reinforcements to stop you on the beach again?

Simply because he has already 430,000 men at Hachinoe, 350,000 more at Aikita and more 240,000 between Ominato and Aomori... 180,000 more are based in the Sendai area... how much more ready reinforcements can he have to spare?!?!!?

Keep up the great work, Greyjoy.

Canoerebel -> RE: LOST VICTORIES (2/4/2012 12:47:01 PM)

The answer to those "how many more men can he have" questions are always painful. The answer always turns out to be: Plenty. That base is an obvious target with the proximity to Sadoga and the terrain. Rader's even left it weakly garrisoned - something he wouldnt do unless (1) he truly is out of men or (2) he's creating a version of a "flak trap" for a ground campaign. I don't think there's any chance that option number one is the right one.

You have ten months until Russia enters the war. There's a ton of fighting to be done until then. But don't further fragment and isolated your last mobile fighting force right now. Not until your sure - or at least as sure as possible.

By the way, have you taken that last IJ outpost in the Kuriles yet?

Based upon the image you're showing, he's got a lot of ship movement between Fusan and Sagoshima / Hiroshima / S. N. Kyushu / Korea. My guess is that's how he's bringing in his oil, fuel and resources. Your Hokkaido operations have (obviously) interdicted resource and oil movement from N. Japan, so this is his remaining lifeline.

How heavily defended are Oki Shoto and / or Ulleungdo? Could these be inexpensively atttained and built up to challenge daily resource, oil and (possibly) LCUs movements across the Tsushima straits? I imagine some DBs and PTs based there would be a real pain in his neck. AND it would cut off the sea of Japan as a backwater for his navy.

Combined with a capture of Okinawa, Luzon or Formosa, this could another way of crimping import of his war material.

Oh-and I agree with Kayak Johnie: he's got more LCUs than you do for this theatre. You won't outnumber him on land if he can help it.

not yet... will keep it suppressed for the moment...but i'm planning to do it in the next month using a couple of Canadian Bdes that should easily overcome the so called garrison...

CR... ok, but he cannot rail in the troops he has in northern Honshu...those bastards have to move out of the contested hexes first...
Secondly...mmmm...well, there's always the other option of reinforce one of my beachheads (say Aikita for example) and create a massive combat force of 12k AVs and finally try a breakthrough...

Third...which other option i have?
