Martin_Goliath -> TOAW hangs after air-to-ship attack (3/24/2011 7:44:49 PM)

Hi all,

Oberst Klink and I are experiencing trouble in a game of CFNA. When loading the Axis turn, the Commonwealth player experiences a hangup. By experimenting, we have narrowed it down to air attacks against shipping: if the Axis player use his Stukas to sink a stack of ships, the hangup occurs during Commonwealth replacement phase. Any suggestions?

Martin

You're not waiting long enough.

In my case 8 hrs and a CPU load of 100% might have been ample enough... We double-checked it on both mine and MarGol's system... I'll email you the .PBL and the pw; see if your system can handle it? :/

I seem to remember another thread about this, but can't find it. It appears the hanging has something to do with checked each sea hex for replacements, which causes the game to hang for a looong time (in scenarios with many sea hexes).

Can I get a pbl please? If it's reproducible, I should be able to figure out why it's happening.

Thanks,

Thanks for looking into this. File sent!

In case this happens to anyone else, the problem is simply that older computers with TOAW 3.4 can't handle scenarios like CFNA. It searches the whole map looking for a place to put a ship. It first looks in each hex to see if it's a sea hex, then looks for the nearest enemy unit. In CFNA, this can be pretty far away.

On a fast machine, it can take 5 minutes, and on a slow machine, it can apparently take over 8 hours. I'm looking into speeding it up for 3.5.

So Bob was right, after all... At least this provides yet another reason for getting a new comp! Many thanks to Ralph for providing an explanation on how a seemingly inconspicuous difference can result in such a huge increase in execution time.

B*gger... So, a 2008 model of a N270 Atom CPU 1.6Ghz and 2GB RAM is called obsolete now? MarGol and I happily accept 'donation' of old crappy 3.6GHz Quad-Core CPU with 8GB RAM and a 1GB VID...:D
